One of my favorite parts of Roman history is how interested in minor details Roman historians were. For that reason, we know things as shocking as (the rumors of) Tiberius having wild sex parties on his private island or Domitian making Senators sit at a dinner table with chairs shaped like gravestones with their names inscribed on them, to things as mundane as Augustus wearing a sunhat to protect his delicate skin whenever he went outside, or Titus having a potbelly.
Nobody is free to act (or even talk) about what they believe on the entire book. If you go with the hypothesis that the 2 reactionary protagonists had their mood bred at Mini-Love, nobody is free to even make an opinion or decide what to believe by themselves.
What leftist thinks Russia is communist or even socialist?
A handful of online idiots who are super convinced by the support of the Russian Communist Party, the Totally Independent States in the Donbass, and the continued Russian military use of Soviet symbolism.
To me that seems like fascists co-opting ussr aesthetics to help justify the killing of ppl they deem lesser.
I mean, it absolutely is, I'm just saying that those co-opted aesthetics are enough to convince some people, unfortunately.
Idk about what’s going on with Russian parties like the RCP, I haven’t looked into any of that.
The Russian Communist Party is essentially token 'opposition' at this point that conveniently agrees with every major United Russia endeavor.
Personally I think the US has a responsibility to aid and also work with zelensky on negotiations (on Ukraine’s terms ofc) to end the war.
Zelenskyy has made it clear ever since the mass graves were discovered in Summer 2022 that only the total withdrawal of Russian troops is going to be regarded as acceptable. So we're probably looking at another two years or so of war, assuming nothing comes out of left field.
But in what sense would someone who bought into that propaganda qualify as an anarchist?
I’m not saying there couldn’t possibly be the odd one-off case. I imagine there are people who have no intention to eliminate meat from their diet who call themselves vegan. But, it’d be weird to call them vegan even if they called themselves vegan.
But he also does run a factory with an army of elven slaves. Plus, the gifts are really just a means to an end. He basically uses them to buy good PR in the form of “belief”, which half of all Christmas movies tell us he needs in order to keep his operation going.
Basically, he keeps giving gifts to children for free in order to create adults who are willing to spend money on Christmas later on. The grift isn’t about little Billy who got a Nintendo Switch for free, it’s the office worker who buys 2 dozen useless desk tchotchkes for their team using actual money, the parties thrown with all the expensive decorations and food, and the carrot on a stick of holiday bonuses that keep workers productive throughout the year.
NOTE: the idea that Caesar committed genocide is a deeply divisive issue that delves into questions of intent, ethnicity vs. political allegiance, whether the concept is even applicable in the Classical world, and evidence, all of which can be argued one way or another.
