Hello, all what's the difference between Kbin and Lemmy?

WonkoTheSane,

@DylanVee UI/UX and there's some controversy behind the Lemmy Devs. Kbin is also super new and has a lot of rough edges to be worked out. But they're both Reddit-likes. It's a matter of personal preference to the user

They’re both forums that look and act similar to Reddit.

Fundamentally - they look different, are coded differently and have some jargon differences.
For example, the communities in Kbin are called “magazines”. A lot of folks still say “sub” as a holdover.

Yet, they’re both part of the Federation, so you can up/down vote, comment and subscribe to each other’s stuff from your home.

Federation is similar to having a group text with friends. It doesn’t matter if you have an iPhone and they have an android. It doesn’t matter if you’re on Verizon and they’re on ATT. The software is designed to communicate with each other.

Lemmy differs from Kbin in that it can be franchised into an independently owned and operated instances. So there’s multiple Lemmys like Lemmy.ml and Lemmy.world. Each instance can set its own rules and even chose which other instances/platforms it can federate without. More importantly, nobody owns all of it.

There are several kbin instances as well though, just not as big as kbin.social.

Just a small correction - you can do this with Kbin too. However, as far as I know it's newer than Lemmy, and it's still an early beta version, so there's fewer servers running Kbin at the moment. https://readit.buzz/ is one of the only other Kbin servers I'm aware of.

There are quite a few around, not just nearly as many as Lemmy instances!

Here's a list: https://fedidb.org/software/kbin

As clones for reddit, either is a distinction without a difference. They offer access to substantively the same content, give or take Beehaw

I have a presence on both, bit I'm posting this from Lemmy.world.

Consider the difference between Ford & GM: both are car manufacturers and the difference is largely academic. Same for Kbin and Lemmy

nan,

They are different link aggregation/forum-type platforms that are also interoperable.

The primary difference is the interface, and some terminology. Kbin also has microblogging like mastodon.

As far as i know kbin it's an instance of Lemmy. There are many instances of Lemmy and the whole of them make the Fediverse.

That's what I have understood but I have not read about it so maybe i am wrong.

So basically there are no differences users of kbin as users of other federated instances can interact between them.

They use different codebases, with different visual styles and web UIs, and different conventions (magazines vs communities and so on).

Yet, both have lots of similarities and can communicate freely allowing users from both to interact in a relatively consistent way.

It would be like using Gmail to send a message to someone using Yahoo Mail.
