KDE Plasma6 Beta2 (but the Live ISO won’t work)

Hi folks.

I have a nice set of packages ready for KDE Plasma6 Beta2 which was just announced two days ago.
As you see from below screenshot, it runs nicely as a Wayland session, both logged in via the SDDM login manager and by running "startkwayland" from a console in runlevel 3.

A few i

@alien for detection does startkwayland show in /run or ps aux after kwayland is running? This is a new one for me. Would be good to get that handled before inxi 3.3.32 ships.

@smxi Hi! I will give you two pieces of information. The first is for a Slackware Wayland session selected from SDDM login manager in runlevel 4. My next post will have the same 'ps' output but then for a Wayland session started from the commandline in runlevel 3.

Command "ps axu |grep wayland" gives the following in runlevel 4: https://termbin.com/4owb

@alien it's also useful to see that some of the commands might test are actually already running with sddm start, but that's why the file being in /run is a more reliable as a test. I will check my vm to see, I forgot to check if their dbus-run-service sway leaves a /run file, or just a process.

@smxi I had promised you the "ps axu | grep wayland" output when Plasma6 was started from runlevel 3 using Slackware's "startkwayland" command: see https://termbin.com/k6q4

@alien thanks, initially looks like I can't detect it separate from sddm start, will have to poke around with that at some point to see if CLI offers a different set of bits in /run in particular than SDDM DM type start. Not a huge deal since probably virtually no kde users will use cli start, but I'm updating my docs to indicate this can be a thing.

@alien excellent, thanks. I believe the existing sddm detection will handle wayland plasma start.

I've been working on the wm/desktop session start logic over past week, so this is good timing.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=278348 may be useful to you, dbus-run-session may not be required. Not sure however, that's how I'm starting Alpine Wayland Sway from ClI in test vm.

The key on the direct cli start will be if startplasma-wayland is in /run directory.

@alien I forgot. You're nvidia? How's wayland on it these days? (Thinking of going AMD for my next video card.)

@garpu I don't use Wayland myself ;-) That's for the youngsters to crave. Therefore I did not attempt to run it on my desktop yet, but perhaps I will this time if I get the Live ISO right.

@alien intetrst8ng. I thought plasma 6 was Wayland only?

@garpu not at all. KDE devs want to make Wayland the default but X11 is still fully supported and of course Slackware can set its own default. In my KTOWN Live ISO for Plasma6 Beta2, X11 is the default. You can choose Wayland from the session dropdown and afterwards, that will then become your new default.
