Java updates for 2024Q2

Three weeks ago, the quarterly (security and stability) updates to various Java source code repositories were released. This means, new packages for OpenJDK versions 8, 11 and 17 are now in my Slackware repository. It took a while but hey, here they are.
For OpenJDK 8 I still use icedtea to compile the Java sources because it is convenient. The more modern

Chromium update fixes 5th zero-day exploit for 2024

In Google's release notes for the latest Chromium 124.0.6367.201 source code it is mentioned that this release fixes a zero-day vulnerability. Beware: this is already the 5th zero-day which was reported and fixed in Chromium in 2024.

This vulnerability is already actively exploited in the wi

@alien are you on the lilypond mailing list? Sounds like Frescobaldi is abandoned. No word from the developer, and the people who were bugfixing don't have the time. (Plus qtwebengine needs to be updated badly, and nobody's able to do so.)

alien,
@alien@fosstodon.org avatar

@garpu real life is eating up all of my time and that will not change soon. All I manage to release are package updates that do not challenge me. Anything which does not (or no longer) compiles and for which the fix is not easily found, ends up on an increasing TODO list. Sorry.

@hlegius my terminal mail program on slackware.com is unable to handle a reply to your email (due to all the strange characters). Therefore my reply here on Mastodon that you should have a temp password for your new Slack Docs Wiki account in your mailbox.

@hlegius indeed the 'Discussion' tab on every Wiki page is where you should discuss possible changes to that page or just want to talk with others on the subject.

Regarding the / backdoor, quoting the original mail https://seclists.org/oss-sec/2024/q1/268

"Debian and several other distributions patch openssh to support systemd notification, and libsystemd does depend on lzma."

"it is likely the backdoor can only work on glibc based systems."

So, if you are using a non-sytemd distro ( e.g. , , , ) or a non-glibc distro (e.g. ) you are most likely not affected, right?

alien,
@alien@fosstodon.org avatar

@Haydar correct Slackware is not affected. The backdoor gets added on systemd-based distros when compiling the distro-native package.

alien,
@alien@fosstodon.org avatar

@gepasi @Haydar you can read the commits that cause the damage. It's still open source. Read the assessments online of people who are a lot more knowledgeable.

@garpu physical health yes, but now my mother had surgery, had a blackout the night after, fell and broke her arm. That currently eats a lot of my time and attention because she can not walk, visit the toilet, get out of bed etc with the support of just one arm.
So, life is on the backburner.

In the works: LibreOffice 24.2.0 for Slackware 15.0

Apart from post-COVID syndrome there were some other setbacks lately, but those were mostly software-centered. Like the fact that I can not build a 32bit Chromium package for instance.
But also the realization that the latest LibreOffice 24.2.0 can no longer be compiled on Slackware 15.0 - its gcc 11.2.0 c

@garpu never heard of that pill being administered here in the Netherlands. Even though it seems to be legal, it is prescription-only. Only for very specific use-cases from what I read.

I somehow avoided getting infected with COVID for all these past four years, but this week unexpectedly it hit me after all - and that while being inoculated multiple times. Oh well, they say that the inoculations keep the more severe symptoms at bay.
Still, this feels like a very bad flu, I have been in bed for two days, feeling delirious in the beginning but just nauseous and dizzy now, accompanied by t

Chromium 121 for Slackware… don’t hold your breath

It's already 41 years ago that released their album "4our clicks" and it blew me away. This band originates near , had a studio in the street I used to cycle through every day and I watched them perform live in De . What a time!
After fourty years the group decided to reform - loosely. They have recorded a new album and are releasing old songs on Youtube. Look at "4our clicks" for instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkxdO1QBf1A&list=PL9PYINLILtaXDcUeaLI4pXXGeO-vpCzKz - still relevant!

Liu Cixin’s sci-fi book “The Three-Body Problem” has been made into series called “3 Body Problem.” It will be on Netflix this spring and they just dropped a trailer.

alien,
@alien@fosstodon.org avatar

@markwyner looks like it is going to get the sauce. Could still be an interesting action series but I encourage you to find where the version is streaming and watch that first. The Chinese released "Three-Body" as a 30-episode series in 2023, depicting the events of the first book in a way that is probably tangential to what we in the West are used to. It takes some mental investment to set aside your cultural conditioning and watch it with open mind.

alien,
@alien@fosstodon.org avatar

@garpu @markwyner the books are well worth reading.
And if you are able to watch all 30 episodes in 7 days then you can do that ad-free during trial-time of a Viki pass, see https://www.viki.com/tv/39255c-three-body . Otherwise, a one-month pass is 5 buck. And ad-sponsored this seems to be free to watch even.

I am not here either to trash or praise Rebel Moon, but I am here to say that one day someone is going to lock Zack Snyder out of the color-grading machine, and that's going to be a bad, crazy day for him

alien,

@scalzi nah, I think that Rebel moon is the best picture Zack created so far. I appreciate it when someone adds a defining style to his work and sticks to it. Color-grading is what makes his work stand out. Over the top? Maybe, but this was a movie that kept me glued to the screen until the end.
