I feel like I occupy this weird place in the as a lover of the lore and details who wants an internally consistent secondary world, prefers when is followed, and likes explanations like the augmentvirus from while disliking reimaginations like in ; while conversely thinking that trek is metaphorical and caring about whether a new star trek show's themes, plot, and character development are there and have anything to actually say or add.

tekrelm,

@forgottrek I think I feel the same way. I am irritated by inconsistencies, and I’m relieved when they’re diegetically explained. But thankfully I can ignore them without too much effort.

At the same time, the first thing I do when having watched an episode is I ask myself what moral or ethical idea it was trying to express. Honestly, I think I’m as irritated when I’m unable to find allegorical meaning in any given episode than when it fails to comport with canon.

@tekrelm do you find it frustrating that fandom discourse seems to act like the two are opposed? I often find that it's talked about as if "nerds" are the ones who get hung up on Canon like it's real facts, and normal "fans" care about story and character.

tekrelm,

@forgottrek Yeah. Steve Shives takes time out of his recent Klingon video to rail against the very idea of telling stories that use canon inconsistencies as a starting point, as though nothing good could possibly come from that. That’s a popular stance to take in the fandom, but it’s not true. It’s odd that people who say they don’t care about canon will dismiss entire episodes because the story happens to smooth canon out. Almost like they only enjoy when canon is broken.

@tekrelm I get the same feeling from as well, and I specifically was like "what's wrong the this" the whole time he kavetched about and in . I think he plays it up for the meme a bit, but I find it totally alien and someone infuriating to me that people get MAD about FIXING a continuity error, as if they liked it not making sense. I get the same impression to everyone who dissed anyone complaining about the redesign in .
