Hey #StarWars folks, when did you fall in love with laser swords, scoundrels, bounty hunters and the Force? Are you an Original Trilogy kid (incl. the Ewok movies), did you find your way to the GFFA in the Dark Times with the Expanded Universe, was Jar Jar your hero, or did Rey and Mando capture your heart?

@jynersolives

I am one of the 2 %.

Saw the OT and the Prequels and liked them (more or less ^^), but I wasn't really a fan until episode 7 aired. I loved it and started watching Clone Wars and Rebels and got into the FFG RPG and listening to SW podcasts.

@jynersolives Honestly, Mark Hamill was my first celebrity crush. In 1977. XD

@jynersolives I saw ROTJ in the theater with my Mom when I was 7 years old. Fell in love with the creatures, especially the Ewoks and the Rancor monster. Absolutely loved just how weird and strange the whole world was. And those wonderful ships....

So, I'll always be an OG fan. That said, Rogue One, Andor, Rebels, the Tartakovsky Clone Wars series, and the later seasons of the animated CW have shown just how far some creative minds can expand the universe.

mission_europa,

@jynersolives I saw Star Wars on VHS in 1985 as a pre-K kid. So I chose OT era, but probably my obsession grew in the 1986-98 era, where I was obsessed with the OT films and toys, later some EU books and games (thank you Timothy Zahn and also Dark Forces) as a kid and was in highschool when the Prequels started coming out.

DavidBHimself,

@jynersolives Glad to see the OT crowd being the majority.
I don't trust those Extended Universe people, though.

First encounter: the marketing in 1977-1978. They were everywhere, I especially remember a box of cookies with Luke and C-3PO on it. I was 4-5. I got my mom to buy me most of the toys (there weren't many then) and I did see part of the Holiday Special, but only part of it because my parents wanted to visit my grandma and were tired of waiting (I only really forgave them a few years ago when I stumbled on the whole thing on Youtube.)

In other words, I was already obsessed with it before even watching the movies, but I finally saw Empire in theaters in 1980 (I dragged my dad there, I think he fell asleep). One of the most amazing moments in my childhood if not my life.

  • DavidBHimself,

@jynersolives I read the Marvel Comics too but quite late. I just read a handful of episodes of the "between Episode IV and Episode V" timeline, but I read all the post Empire ones (I can't remember when they were published in France, there was a few years delay from the US publication)

I think my love for Star Wars never died during the late 80s, early 90s in part thanks to the TTRPG. I played a lot with my friends.
I never cared much for the Extended Universe, for one good thing, you had dozens that were just crap that was produced only because some Star Wars fans would buy anything with "Star Wars" stamped on it (and it makes me facepalm every time I see people missing those.)

I "quit" Star Wars after Revenge of the Sith. Destroying Darth Vader and turning him into an angsty wimp this way was just unforgivable.

2005-2015 is really the only period of my life with no Star Wars in it.

Then, I got curious about Rebels, and instantly fell in love with it.

I still don't care about the Extended Universe and the obsession with the canon. And as you know the new movies and TV shows are hits and misses.

Fun fact: the only Star Trek I have ever watched is the original series.
Star Trek wasn't big in France in the 80s and 90s. I'm not even sure if the Nex Generation was broadcast before much later. So I never hopped on the bandwagon. I'm kinda curious about it these days, but don't have the time to catch up with yet another series.

@jynersolives I watched the films on VHS as a kid, then saw them in cinemas as the Special Edition was released. But ... I also loved Jar Jar (at least initially, hey, I was 11), and Rey, and particularly the Last Jedi, and also, very much so, Andor ❤️

@jynersolives I started disliking him when I was 14, but for me, he was redeemed by The Clone Wars, as were many other flaws of the prequels

@jynersolives The first Star Wars movie I watched was Empire in 2008. I immediately fell in love with Star Wars and it was kinda fantastic to have the whole original trilogy and prequel trilogy available from the start.

I was also the perfect age at 12 years old to obsessively enjoy all the movies. I like to think I discovered Star Wars at the exact right time, not too early that I might’ve lost interest, also not too late when society brainwashes adults into not enjoying kids stuff anymore.
