The difference was internet life wasn't integrated with real life yet, not like today. No one wanted to use their real name on anything, except Myspace. Message boards were self-contained islands to talk about your favorite hobby, team, band, etc. No one wanted to have a persona/brand that bridged real life and the internet. Even early Youtube was all mostly people making weird/surrealist/goofy animations and home movies with no goal of getting rich doing so. It was all for the fun of it. They didn't use their real names as their user names on Youtube. It was basically like a bigger and more mainstream version of Newgrounds.

przez co ludzie z fedi, niekoniecznie świadomi istnienia /kbina, ratują /kbinowi nie tylko objętość, ale i poziom!

If you make a living creating content like blogs, videos or podcasts you need to be on the main platforms. If you’re looking for a place to be honest and gather with people with the same values as you, then you choose wisely for that platform. Social apps are a big shopper magazine now.
