Even worse was the other case that was based on a gay person's marriage. Turns out he is/was not gay, already married, had a child and didn't know that his name was used for a case.
The US Supreme Court is judging made up cases now.
As a European I hope that everyone in the US will vote accordingly to at least try to bring back some semblance of rationality back.
One of the challenges in overcoming the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is needing a sufficient leftist majority in both branches of Congress to pass legislation, and this majority needs to be large enough to overwhelm the more restrained members of that majority. If this ever actually happens, the revamp of the SCOTUS is an inevitability.
The grim reality is insofar as legislation goes, any law passed or executive action taken can be challenged legally and the SCOTUS seems very willing to grant cert in arbitrary and capricious manners to overturn the legislation (or past judicial decision). The only saving grace of this series of decisions lately is revoking the independent state legislature theory, but that doesn’t really stop state governments from committing electoral fraud :/
Rationality isn’t returning to the SCOTUS for a long time sadly.
Talking to pastor Jim Garlow on a broadcast of the World Prayer Network, Johnson spoke ominously of America facing a “civilizational moment.” He said, “The only question is: Is God going to allow our nation to enter a time of judgment for our collective sins? … Or is he going to give us one more chance to restore the foundations and return to Him?”
The segment was filmed Oct. 3, just weeks before Johnson’s unexpected rise to become speaker of the House. Garlow pressed the clean-cut Louisiana congressman to say “more about this ‘time of judgment’ for America.” Johnson replied: “The culture is so dark and depraved that it almost seems irredeemable.” He cited, as supposed evidence, the decline of national church attendance and the rise of LGBTQ youth — the fact, Johnson lamented, that “one-in-four high school students identifies as something other than straight.”
Discussing the risk of divine retribution, Johnson invoked Sodom, the Old Testament city destroyed by God for its wickedness with a rain of burning sulfur. Johnson is a polished orator, but in a closing prayer with Garlow he grew tearful. Johnson intoned, “We repent for our sins individually and collectively. And we ask that You not give us the judgment that we clearly deserve.”
Oh no, gay people aren't being persecuted and people don't believe in my brand of absurdity. My imaginary friend hates that!
Circuit judges elected every 16 years w/o term limits by a popular vote would probably strike a nice balance. The role requires expertise, which is only really established by years in the field. Also want to avoid the election cycle being too influential on decisions. Yet, there needs to be a democratic mechanism.
Given the volatile nature of the current political discourse, I'd suggest some basic safety features. In my opinion, the following should result in a ban / removal:
Doxing of any user
Posting of personal information
Calls to or threats of violence
Harassment and bullying
On a more personal note, I would love to see an active team providing additional context in comments and fact-checking to posted articles. This might help reduce some of the hyperbole and over the top commentary that turned political discussion on Reddit into a shouting match and echo chamber. Political discussions are best when they're informed and honest, and that often takes a more hands-on approach from those who wish to curate and foster real conversation.
I’ve always wanted to do an active mod team that comments in real time, but it would take a few more people (although some AI auto mods could potentially be fact checkers… but that’s a whole other project. But, I think, a project worth considering after we do the basics.)
I hope this doesn’t come across as too “opportunist,” but I would really enjoy providing help with active fact-checking. Feel free to DM if you start looking for people to actively fill such a role.
If they actually read the bible critically they'd probably be Atheists. Most let the men who claim to speak for God interpret it for them, omitting the inconvenient parts.
You think Noam tires of being right all the time? I think it would feel burdensome after that long. Who knows, maybe he loves it. Man is a treasure that has shoes too big for anyone to ever fill. It will be the end of an era when he passes. Thank you for the topical share!
