UltraMagnus0001,

Just watched John Oliver’s chocolate thing. I’m torn because I like chocolate, but Nestle is definitely one I avoid.

They sell a lot more than just chocolate.
A small selection of their brands that are popular in the US:

  • Hot Pockets
  • DiGirorno frozen pizzas
  • California Pizza Kitchen frozen pizzas
  • Stouffer's
  • Lean Cuisine
  • Häagen-Dazs
  • Nature's Bounty supplements
  • Boost nutrition drinks
  • Orgain protein powder
  • Purina pet food
  • Alpo pet food
  • Mighty Dog pet food
  • Fancy Feast pet food
  • Tidy Cat litter
  • Toll House cookie dough
  • Coffee-Mate creamer
  • After Eight mints
  • Taster's choice coffee
  • Starbucks coffee (licensed)
  • Blue Bottle Coffee
  • San Pellegrino water
  • Ovaltine
  • Sweet Leaf Tea
  • Carnation evaporated and condensed milk
  • Nesquick
  • Nestea
  • Nescafe

They're harder to boycott than a lot of other companies because they hide behind a lot of brands.

Lalaz4,

Didn't know about Blue Bottle 😭

UltraMagnus0001,

on that list the only thing I get once in a while is digiorno

scutiger,

It’s honestly not that hard. I haven’t bought their products in a few years now. There are alternatives for all of these products, many of which are actually better. They just don’t have the name recognition.

Definitely, the hard part is keeping track of which brands they own.

Yeah. Even a popular infographic someone made a few years ago, which still gets posted, is outdated because of brands changing owners.

I’d like it if companies were legally obligated to prominently display the name of their parent company. Right now, companies are allowed to operate under what are effectively aliases.

QuinceDaPence,

Yep, if it's 20 layers deep, guess you better dedicate a whole side of the packaging to listing who owns who.

I'd also not be against limits on how deep it can go. That could easily be an antitrust thing, especially in the case of Nestle.

Hawke,

It’s a double win. Nestle doesn’t get your money, and you don’t have to eat their shitty chocolate.

ForgotAboutDre,

Look into craft chocolate. Some of the stuff taste like the chocolate you imagine in your dreams. Milk chocolate can be creamier than you think is possible. The dark chocolates can be incredibly complex. The ingredient list is also much shorter.

It costs more, but it’s not unreasonable. They tend to pay the local chocolate produce a much better wage, they often exceed ‘fair trade’ prices for their raw Coco.

AngryCommieKender,

John Oliver actually mentioned Tony’s Chocolate by name specifically because they are honest about trying to be slavery free, and they pay their farmers double what the big 5 pay, but even they admit that they cannot guarantee 100% slavery free chocolate.

ForgotAboutDre,

I wouldn’t consider Tony chocolate to be equivalent to craft chocolate. Craft chocolate often has very good traceability. They will be buying there beans from specific farms and processors.

Tony chocolate tries to make mass market low cost high profit product. They absolutely could avoid slavery, they choose not to.

FrostyTrichs,

The vast majority of American chocolate sucks compared to options from other countries, especially when they use corn syrup instead of sugar for sweets.

Let Nestle burn.

TheMusicalFruit,

Nestle isn’t American, it’s a Swiss company.

UltraMagnus0001,

True, but they make different chocolate for different regions.

XbSuper,

Cost is a major factor in quality. I rarely buy quality chocolate, because it’s like $15 a bar vs $3, and I just don’t care that much.

However, fuck Nestle.

Nougat,

Quantity over quality, baby.

Not_mikey,

American chocolate only tastes bad to non-americans. American chocolate uses butyric acid, which is present in vomit and rancid butter, so those that are sensitive to it think it tastes disgusting. Americans though are usually used to it because they grew up on it and don’t taste it.

Still fuck nestle though for a myriad of other reasons.

Hawke,

American here. It tastes disgusting, period.

rhadamanth_nemes,

The same company that laughed about stealing water from indigenous people? No way.
