Great Salt Lake’s dust melted Utah’s ‘greatest snow on earth’ more than two weeks early in 2022

A study conducted in Utah reveals that the region is experiencing a new "dust on snow regime." Darkened snow melted 17 days earlier than usual in the winter of 2022. This rapid runoff poses problems for water supply systems and ski industries, and also increases the risk of wildfires as drying forests become more susceptible. The Great Salt Lake, which is largely impacted by human activity, has become a significant source of dust pollution. The study emphasizes the need for policymakers to take action to protect the lake and address the associated challenges.
