My own nuggets from the WebAIM 10th screen reader user survey…

A reminder that non-disabled SR users are probably not the ones to dictate how disabled SR users should consume content and patterns.

For context, I do not consider myself an advanced SR user and I am alarmed how much more I know than devs & testers I encounter who cavalierly assert what is and is not good for SR users.

When I see a pattern / widget / article, especially one that asserts its accessibility features, show screen reader pics and recordings only from macOS VoiceOver, that is a bit of a red flag for me.

This preference also leads to devs who think VoiceOver quirks are genuine bugs in their software (though, actually, their egos make them think VO quirks are bugs in all SRs, not their own software).

Like, have you tried to get a JAWS license outside the US?

This assumes the cost is not a barrier, that is.

Firefox is the second most common browser in use across SRs, though with a paltry 13.5%. Safari comes in at a paltrier 7% but is only paired with VO for what I hope are obvious reasons.

Anyway, perhaps one takeaway here is to target Firefox before Safari in your unnecessary browser targeting? Though VO is knowingly not good with Firefox, so, yeah, start with standards first.

This kinda reinforces my points?

Granted, I always developed on the same platform I was targeting (which is why I am also a terrible user of AmigaOS, Mac System 9 & below, had a failed dalliance with BeOS, and surfed in IE daily ugh).

Anyway, Windows users are at 86.1%, macOS at 9.6%, and Linux at 2.9%.

SR users largely stick with their primary SR because they are familiar with it and its capabilities.
https://webaim.org/projects/screenreadersurvey10/#reason

It helps that SR users are also largely satisfied with their SR.
https://webaim.org/projects/screenreadersurvey10/#satisfaction

There is a lot more in there, including mobile SRs, things that trip up users and so on, but this thread is long enough. Go read it.

Respondents indicating that they are very or somewhat satisfied by their primary screen reader: NVDA 97.6%, JAWS 95.6%, VoiceOver 92.4%, Narrator - 88.9%.

While you’re here, I updated my 2017 post “Not All Screen Reader Users Are Blind”:
https://adrianroselli.com/2017/02/not-all-screen-reader-users-are-blind.html#Data2024

In this latest survey, 76.6% of respondents (1,179 of 1,539 total) chose "blindness" from a list.

@aardrian 1 caveat, as always, is the self-select nature of the respondents. Freedom seems to push hard for people to take part in the survey. Who knows how that influences the results

@ppatel @aardrian
There was an anomalous bump up for JAWS in 2021, I assumed it was due to a concerted effort to get JAWS-using participants.

But at the time, didn't Freedom make it more available and/or affordable due to the COVID pandemic? Could that help explain a temporary increase?

The survey doesn't get into specific versions but I assume most people who pay for it themselves use JAWS Home; if you can afford the subscription, it's probably worth it. Like using Microsoft 365 vs. LibreOffice.

@cwilcox808 Vispero promoted the survey through its Freedom emails the year after NVDA was reported as the most popular. I stopped paying attention after that since it was clear they would continue to try to juice the numbers.

@ppatel I know one year in particular where there was some internal bragging that they pushed the survey to their users, and as I said then, not cool.

I don’t know if they are still actively doing that.

@aardrian Yes. They still are. I saw it in multiple places.

@ppatel Somehow this does not surprise me.
