I find the conversation around autism awareness versus autism acceptance interesting. I'm still mulling it over, trying to understand why they are presented as opposing views. I feel like awareness is at one end of the continuum, with acceptance on the other. You do not always have to understand something to respect it, but you need to know it exists to accept and appreciate it with intention. Do you have any thoughts on this?

devxvda,

@BZBrainz @actuallyautistic I don't see them as opposing views.

You need awareness to drive acceptance and vice versa (to a lesser degree).

If it was a binary choice, which it isn't, acceptance is more important.

@devxvda One thing I ponder too is “acceptance?” Or accommodation? What does it mean to accept? What happens if someone accepts or acknowledges my and then… nothing? Thoughts and prayers? Is that really the goal? I accept you? Or do I embrace and respond to your human needs? Or is that an implicit assumption of acceptance I missed? To me, if to accept is the end goal it seems… lacking. @BZBrainz @actuallyautistic
