This nails it. It's what i've watched happen my entire life. We let the baby boomers off the economic treadmill and they got all snotty and refused to be content with kicking down at scapegoats. They even bitched about fighting their generation's war! I mean, jesus! We even had to shoot their leaders.
My parents were boomer teachers. They worked an annualized 28 hour week and retired in the two-home class.
They were workaholics without enough to do. They became hobbyholics, which appears common in boomerdom. Give up on social change and distract yourself with crafts.
I see a lot of the modern world as simply makework to keep the boomers occupied.
As a teacher of teens, I hated it when people criticised “the younger generation”. Teens do what teens do, influenced by the context of their lives.
As a young boomer, I also resent sweeping generalisations about boomers. Yes, some are funding their lifestyles with property portfolios while Millenials & Gen Zs worry that they’ll never own their own home, but I see the children of such people doing exactly the same thing, with the support of their wealthy parents.
The worst aspects of the boomer generation are about class and privilege. As people age, some, those who’ve managed to do okay or better in a capitalist society, then work to protect the privileges they’ve gained and pass them on to their progeny.
I think you’ll find that this has happened throughout history.
It’s about class, & criticising a particular generation, including all of the people who haven’t acquired wealth or don’t abuse the privilege that wealth brings is ageist. Boomer women are the fastest growing cohort of homeless people. Boomer people of colour? Boomer autistic people and those with other disabilities?
