Banking app refuses to work if downloaded from outside of the play store

Hello! I installed my banking app from Aurora Store, and when launched this message appear:
https://lemmy.kde.social/pictrs/image/8a77078f-1c29-446a-8eb1-80e53c5f8ecf.png

that translated means:

AN ERROR OCCOURRED:

security issues has been found (DX004). reinstall the APP from official and updated stores. For other informations, contact the customer service.

Currently I have both aurora store and google play on my smartphone, so I can just install it from there and no problems, but on my next phone I’m planning to install LineageOS without GApps, and I’m wondering what can I do to make it work. Is there a way to disguise Aurora Store for the google play store, or something like this?
I also tried installing the Huawei version of the app through Obtainium, but nothing changed.

thanks in advance for any help!

NemoWuMing,

The bank is actually looking out for you, this time, lol

shortwavesurfer,

Try www.yourbank.com or get a new bank. Or live off monero and install cake wallet from their fdroid repo

If you’re looking at running LineageOS, have you considered just using your banks website? There may be some functionality lost, like push notifications, but you may be able to pivot to email or SMS notifications. Are there app only functions, like mobile deposit? Different banks do things differently.

tubbadu,

sadly the app is needed for many operations, paying included, so I cannot live with only the website :(

lemann,

I think you’d need to find out where Android is storing the record of apps installed from what store, and change that record to indicate the app was from the play store, instead of Aurora.

It’s pretty difficult to come across technical android documentation for this stuff though imo. If you end up being SOL, would the bank’s website work OK for your banking needs? If the banking app requires GMS this could get tricky… easiest thing in this situation imo would be to use the website when you move to LOS.

I was lucky in the sense that my bank issued me a hardware 2FA device to do mobile banking from my rooted mobile

tubbadu,

Sadly the app is compulsory, as it is needed to authorize payments and so on. I wrote to the customer service, if they’ll ever answer me the answer will probably be “fuck off just install it from the play store”…

I don’t have android knowledge this deep but I’ll try to look for this, thanks for the tip ;)

With root you can install apks with KingInstaller to mask them as if they are from the Play Store

@tubbadu try this and let us know if it works

you want to turn control of your personal bank account over to an unofficial and untrusted app?

tubbadu,

Well, I want to degoogle my phone, so yes if the only “official” and “trusted” source is Google Play

HidingCat,

This is why being ideological is not practical: If you want to use banking apps, don't do stuff like that. The security is there for a reason. Recently on the news here someone fell for a malware scam depriving them of their entire savings account. The bank isn't being difficult, it's trying to reduce cases like this.

deGoogling your phone is separate from letting some unknown entity raid your bank account

(I mean … if some hacker empties out your bank account then you won’t be able to afford a smartphone so deGoogling it will no longer be an issue … )

MoshBit,

How about we just answer the question and let them decide how to use their phone?
