Update your new iPhone 15 BEFORE setting it up

Apple have warned users of the new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro to update to iOS 17.0.2 before attempt to transfer data from another iPhone.

The version of iOS 17 that shipped with the new iPhones contains a bug that could cause the phone to get stuck on an infinite Apple logo during the data transfer process. iOS 17.0.2 fixes this issue.

When the iPhone 15 is being set up for the first time it should automatically download the update. My iPhone 15 Pro Max did, but some are reporting their phones skipping that step.

The issue affects all iPhone 15 models.

If you have been affected you can restore the phone by following these steps.

  1. Connect your phone to a computer running macOS or Windows with the latest version of iTunes installed.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Then, press and hold the side button.
  3. Continue holding the button until an image of a cable and a camper appears.
  4. Choose restore when given the option to restore or update.
