Sydney CBD sees uptick in commuters as big banks lead push to return workers to offices

Anyone been forced back into the office? Really interested to see how this plays out over time. I am not really sure how these companies forcing people back in are going to compete with the ones that don't, given the intense skills shortage and near record low unemployment numbers.

Big windfall for recruiters, that's for sure.

Humanbiscuit,

We’re supposed to have returned to 50/50 … I’m going into the office tomorrow for the second time in 2 months .. only because I want to pick some things up while I’m in there. Everybody is ignoring the 50/50 rule. Most average one day a week. My home setup is much more efficient than the office.

hoges25,

It’s interesting, speaking to boomer managers vs millennials there seems to anecdotally be a fundamental disagreement on what a job is. Boomers are still stuck in the age of the 9-5 where you’re paid for your time and are loyal to the company, where younger people see it quite rightfully as a return of services. If I’m paid for a job and I do it remotely and have the same or better output, why should the business care? One example I heard was the they were forcing all their staff back into the office because people were doing side businesses on company time - that’s a management and relationship issue, not a wfh issue.

The often cited example is collaboration, yet resoundingly my experience is that so called ‘collaboration’ and contact is usually just wasted time and people wanting to make their voice heard in a meeting or interrupt you at your desk for inane things that could be a 2 second teams message.

Poor genX, always forgotten

bio,

Yeah, 100%.

There's nothing wrong with an office, but, in my view, there is something quite wrong with forcing people back in. And all of the people making these decisions are boomers, who have severe boomer brain. They are complete slaves to their own biases, and I hope it hurts them. People who want WFH & hybrid jobs can get them if they are willing to look for them.
