Looking for , please!

My spouse is having shoulder replacement surgery and facing a long recovery over the dark winter. I thought it might be fun to learn how to play some kind of game together - a , or , even role-playing like D & D...maybe?

We've never done anything other than a few board games. I'd like it to be fun for two people (or more), relatively easy to get the hang of, and for video games, no gun violence.

Thank you! Please boost :o)

@_ohcoco_ Portal 2 is absolutely hilarious as 2 player. Maybe that's just me & my friend being utterly rubbish but finding our failures very funny.

It can also be played across platforms, which is handy.

Artemis is a starship bridge simulator. Again, cross-platform. However I think 2 might be too small to really enjoy it.

Some co-op board games; Time Stories, Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective, Arkham Horror.

Also Hero Quest can be played with two people but it's HARD.

@_ohcoco_ portal 1 and 2 can both be played single player, with one of you controlling and the other helping to figure out the puzzles.

You can play a lot of platformers and puzzlers like that, taking it in turns with the controls.

I want to recommend Fez (mind bending little platform puzzle game), but I'm not sure it was released outside of PS3.

Never Alone, Ori and the Blind Forest (and sequel, Will-o-the-Wisps), Abe's Oddyssey and Abe's Exodus also combine platform & puzzles.

@_ohcoco_ My constant go-to for a board game is Carcasonne. Easy to play, but lots to learn to play better, and some good add-ons. Also you make a lovely map while playing and I love a good map.

Should also be OK to play with limited arm mobility. Hope the surgery goes well.

@eclectech Thank you! Surgery went well. Recovery is no fun so far, but things are a little better each day. The game recommendations have given me something to look forward to for winter - I also love maps, so this game sounds fun!

rngesus_wept,

@_ohcoco_ On the board games side, there's Las Vegas, Tiny Towns, Azul, and Verdant.

If you're willing to learn more rules, I recommend Istanbul.

All these games are accessible to newer players and can be played one-handed, though it helps to have two for setup.

If the surgery doesn't rule out holding a hand of cards with the affected arm, then also add Fox in the Forest*, Lost Cities*, Hanamikoji*, and Lanterns, none of which require shuffling a deck during play. (* = 2 player only)

rngesus_wept,

@_ohcoco_ I'd rather let the games themselves do the pitching, but in particular:

Las Vegas: most likely to get buy-in from other people who want to keep things simple

Hanamikoji: good for two-player cerebral fights

Tiny Towns: rewards long-term planning

Istanbul: most likely to sustain repeated plays and player development

What's the general mood you are looking for? Something relaxing or psychologicals tête-à-tête Death-Note-style? Relatively easy games come in all shapes and sizes🤓

"Mantis Fall" is a very peculiar mafia-themed which gives it best when played by just two people (which is something unheard of in this genre!). During the game setup, each of you shall draw a random character card. If there's two of you, the deck contains two "innocent witness" cards and one "assassin" card. Which means one unknown card will be left out of the game. Witnesses want to get out of town. The assassin wants to kill them before that happens. (1/2)

Since the only character card you will ever see is yours, two scenarios may arise. If you draw the one assassin card, the person in front of you is a witness. You want them to lower their guard, convincing them you are also trying to get out town with them, only to backstab them at the right moment. If, on the other hand, you draw a witness card, you have to read the other player. Should you focus on getting out of town? Would it be paranoid to kill them before they kill you? (2/2)

That feeling of climaxing hysteria is addictive, but building trust in each other from zero right after that while still in the game is so wholeshome :blobcataww: It's a feeling you don't often experience with someone you would otherwise already trust in your everyday life.

@_ohcoco_ One of my favourite boardgame channels on YouTube put out a video about two player games this week which is worth a look: https://youtu.be/ekgglzrBSiw?si=wUlYQBNiw1gXT5GR

I’ll also throw in a recommendation for Fog of Love: https://youtu.be/8a9oNOjI8V4?si=IB5TO0FD2d49QsUs

@_ohcoco_ Elite Dangerous: Odyssey for sure.

Lots of relaxing peaceful things to do, lots of exciting heart pounding things too. And great multiplayer support.

@_ohcoco_ I noticed the thing about guns. So Elite Dangerous: Odyssey does have guns, but combat is only a small part of the game (compared to exploring, trading, sightseeing, passenger transport, exobiology, mining) and even some things like blockade running, where there are lots of guns but you're not expected to use one.

@_ohcoco_ perfect, at it's core it's a space trading game but the exploration game is on-point.

The feeling of gliding in on a planet or cruising along a planetary ring is just amazing.
