I haven’t had the chance to see this yet but I think it comes out near me this weekend. I love Paul Giamatti but I initially wrote off this movie because it looks like the classic trope of grumpy old guy and misunderstood young guy don’t like each other at first but it all works out in the end. But again, I like the directing style so… maybe I’ll give it a shot
It IS that but it really takes you through a much more fraught journey than I am used to with this sort of movie. I’d love to hear your opinion after the fact.
For background Halloween ambiance I throw on the Hell House LLC trilogy (free on Tubi). Other favorites for this time of year: Trick 'r Treat, Idle Hands, WNUF Halloween Special, Satan’s Little Helper, and Cabin in the Woods.
If you’re looking for a new movie this year, Cobweb came out in August and has quite the Autumn/Halloween vibe.
I feel you there. I turned my movie going into a streaming service with more steps by paying for a “Season Pass”. $20/month I can see 1 movie per day for the entire month. It’s a good deal if you go a lot, and I do.
I’d add the new hellraiser as well, which is a sentence I never thought I’d say, but it’s actually good.(yes they changed how almost everything works but I think it keeps the spirit of the original)
The signal is pretty scary. I try to watch that one when I can. People hear a signal and it drives them violently crazy, they think people aren’t who they are and such.
“The Strangers” is one of the best movies to pull off an uncomfortable feeling right from the beginning to the end. And it comes off as much more realistic than many slashers, with call backs and bad decisions and right decisions and unfortunate mishaps.
Without spoiling it, the movie is a masterclass of writing and atmosphere, imo.
The link is for a trailer, but essentially it’s about a couple of high school girls in a way over the top satirical high school who start a “self defense club” (essentially a fight club) in order to get into the pants of some girls they like (very Super Bad style). And how everything goes off the rails. It’s over the top and awesome. The major theme is essentially coming of age, but they go hard.
