Ah what a great place to have host COP28. Surely the UAE is an advocate for the phasing out of fossil fuels and would never use this opportunity to compromise or eliminate dissenters to the still growing fossil fuel industry their entire society definitely isn't built on.

A climate summit at the UAE. It sounds so nonsensical it made me want to know how it came to this. So apparently UN state members are organized in regional groups and each regional group takes turn in hosting. This time it was the Asia-Pacific group’s turn. I think (couldn’t find precise info about this) the members of the regional group agree among themselves who gets to host.

In my humble opinion this could mean at least two things:

  • The UAE have a powerful influence in the Asia-Pacific region. They wanted to host it and everyone went along.
  • The Asia-Pacific region members are widely against climate action and the choice of the UAE is a manifestation of protest or negligence.
