Also much as I like my carbon metamaterials, but steel is just an excellent structural material on basic material physics grounds.

@Sevoris Oh, sure! I don't think steel is leaving ever. I just wonder if there are possible other patterns that would serve the same role as well or better as the alternating diamond one we all know.
Similarly the yellow/black diagonal stripes for marking a dangerous area or object.

My gut feeling is that diamond plate will be replaced with something that is less hazardous when wet.

Whether that's using a different macroscopic pattern, or something with a clever microscopic texturing, or some sort of coating, I don't know.

But there's at least one flaw, which is a good reason for switching to something better.

@isaackuo @Sevoris Ah! That's something! Ideas that come to mind is have channels to drain the water aside,.or making the perforations more dense and deeper/taller so that water slides from the peaks and allows for grip even if there's no way to drain it fully (or at all). This gives me ideas for some designs!

@unfa In Hugh Howey's dystopian future they still are standard on the steps of the silo. So the answer is yes.
