Feddit.uk is shaping up to be a UK version of Reddit. With most UK subs in one place.

I actually really enjoy this, it’s really cool to login each day and only see UK specific content in a similar style of the subreddits of old, and with most of the features of Reddit. Previously I had to have them with a multi reddit, but my home page was full of world wide content.

I like that due to federation I can still look at content from around the world but it’s not my default experience. Feels more personalised.

oktoberpaard,

I feel the same way about feddit.nl, which is becoming the default for Dutch communities. It’s nice how the local feed is actually local in terms of geography and how it enables you to discover new communities which would otherwise be invisible in the all feed.

TheNumberOfGeese, (edited )

People seem so friendly here too! (for now at least!)

BananaTrifleViolin, (edited )

Yeah I really like this, it's nice to be in UK specific communities when I'm set to local and see the rest of the Fediverse on subscribed and all.

Personally I have an account here at Feddit UK for UK subs, and separate accounts on other servers on Kbin.Social I'm using for non-UK/generic content.

I'm tempted to subscribe to broader Fediverse content from Feddit UK but then that data would come onto this server (backend). I'm not sure whats the best approach - use one instance to browse the whole Fediverse or multiple accounts on different instances to compartmentalise a little?

It is nice just seeing UK content when I'm on Feddit UK. I even have a custom Lemmy theme (from https://github.com/2xx04/lemmy-ui-themes/) which I changed the background background to a UK Pic so it is instantly seperate from other lemmy instances. The Lemmy UI Themes are easy to install by end users in their browser (use Stylus extension) and can also be installed and adpated by server owners to theme their server.

Senseibu,

Guess that’s your choice mate, and comes with the extra freedom

Would people be interested in a "request a community" community? I was thinking about how patchy the coverage is and saw something similar pop up on another instance. It would give people the chance to flag up what they think is needed or would be of interest. It can either be the same an existing Reddit sub or something new - no need for us just being a Reddit clone.

It would mean that, as people migrate over, they find the places they are looking for and can just carry in pretty seamlessly.

Senseibu,

Sounds like a good idea to me 👍 I made 3 communities but hesitant to moderate anymore at the moment unless I’m requested to. Mod work is light at the moment but come July 1st I think we will start to see more users via apps, I heard reddit is fun dev is making a Lemmy app so I reckon that alone will bring tens of thousands over.

Emperor,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

Right all started over on Community Request.

If anyone has any ideas, bung them in there.

GreatAlbatross,
@GreatAlbatross@feddit.uk avatar

I've held back on number of communities moderated too, as I feel at this stage it's also kinda my duty to act as a starter motor until things get going.
Being a mayor of a ghost town ain't no fun!

Some other instances have community creation turned off, so communities need to be thought through and sent to admins for approval. I'm kinda neutral on the idea, because while it might raise the quality and commitment, it's another entry barrier.

Emperor,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah, I am in the same boat - there are communities we need but I am not knowledgeable enough to do much getting it started. I could see me starting some but one of my first posts would be a request for moderators.

I'll get that community rolling and see how it goes - it might focus folks on things they can do.

I'm currently using the Jerboa app, which is working nicely but it's handy to have an idea of the date of the coming storm. Might be able to get a few things up and running before then.

Oo 'eck

Senseibu,

🤣

scrchngwsl,

Yeah, it's great. And even with the UK subs on other instances, i can still subscribe to them via the magic of federation!

The only thing is a lot of the communities have lots of subscribers but no posts. I do hope the creators of those communities aren't just squatting...

nonexcludable,

I am really happy to see this, and props to Tom for making it happen.

I have some minor anxiety down the line about Reddit claiming the URL due to the similarity with their trademark. Am I being paranoid?

BananaTrifleViolin,

I think this is an unfounded concern, it's similar but clearly different. Should that be wrong, the community can move to a new name/domain in good time but will remain as is and connected to the Fediverse.

Senseibu,

Would be a longish process if that was to occur and enough time to notify the community. Potentially could happen though for defensive brand management on Reddits part

LUHG_HANI,
@LUHG_HANI@lemmy.world avatar

That's not really a good thing. If feddit.uk became overloaded and went down everything would be lost. Best to have a nice split with instances.

Senseibu,

Any good admin would take regular backups, if Tom wanted to stop administering the instance and isnt on a cloud platform, those back ups can be migrated to a new server. Lemmy can run on docker too

GreatAlbatross,
@GreatAlbatross@feddit.uk avatar

And plenty of people here would be happy to carry the server on with similar ethos.

Senseibu,

Absolutely

Kichae,

Plenty of opportunity for other .uk instances to pop up and share the load.

CouldntCareBear,

Share the load. Share the looaad.

tkc,
@tkc@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah, it's really great. I'm a bit sad that UKCasual has ended up somewhere else though...

Moodel,

Don't be. The internet evolves as with everything else :)

tkc,
@tkc@feddit.uk avatar

I'm not anymore, I went and made one here.🥸

Emperor,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

I suppose there's no real reason not to start a UKCasual here and may the best community win!

Senseibu,

Lets do it

tkc, (edited )
@tkc@feddit.uk avatar

I should of just done it in the first place rather than moan about it haha!

Edit: Boom! https://feddit.uk/c/casualuk

Emperor,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

Nice one!

Let the best Casual UK win! Or happily co-exist, it's all very casual after all.

I'm like, easy or whatever man....

That's the attitude!

Senseibu,

Just had a look and there is currently:

It'll be interesting to see how things develop.

Moodel,

Yeah ty for that. Made a list on Masto so I can see them all in one place :)

Senseibu,

Just subscribe to them all, that’s what I do

Emperor,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

I'm subbed to the lemmy.world one, not sure I'll bother with the others. I suspect the smaller ones will be largely inactive and just confuse me at some future point (my future self being easily confused).

tkc,
@tkc@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah, I have done the same. It shouldn't be a competition. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the others aren't actually full of Brits, so hopefully ours is quality over quantity haha!

There's a lot of chatter across the lemmyverse about how to solve fractured communities with the same topic. Maybe it won't be an issue forever.

Emperor,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

For something like Casual UK, I don't see it being an issue, I suspect wars may be fought over Star Wars and Star Trek.

juniper,

UKcasual on lemmy.world has 2.33k subs. You'll see a different number depending on which instance you view it from. To see the true number, you need to view it at the source instance.

Emperor,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

Ah right, every day is a learning experience on here.

GreatAlbatross,
@GreatAlbatross@feddit.uk avatar

I like this too. Having spent a bit of time flitting around the fediverse, I believe that we're going to see local instances with local content, and the larger places with more global.

And honestly? I think it's quite a healthy way to do things.
If you live in a country of 5 million people, instead of being fractured across 5 big instances, someone can put all the local stuff in a local lemmy for local people (we'll have no trouble here). If the site admin has to pack it in one day, it's a far less daunting task to transplant, than a megasite deciding to suddenly go public.

Then when you want to do more global things, you go to a global/US instance.

Emperor,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

local instances with local content

For local people, hopefully.

wewbull,

This is where you get the special stuff.

We don’t bother the outside world, we don’t want it bothering us.

ckempo,

Yes, and I love it. I specifically sought out a UK instance for this very reason and am grateful to @tom for setting it up.
