atomicpoet,

A pretty disingenuous comparison between Nostr, Bluesky, and “Mastodon”.

Sure, “anyone” can generate a public/private key. Now how many people will actually do that? And how many will use the public/private key to port their account to a different device?

Moreover, choosing a server is not a requirement for “Mastodon”—and now Mastodon itself pushes a default.

Do I like default servers? Not at all. But that’s another matter entirely.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews ah yes, if only signing up for Mastodon were as easy for non-technical folks as checks notes generating a key pair…

@atomicpoet @fediversenews I've shared private keys with friends who might use Mastodon. Some of them have come but they don't like the speed of this place or the work you have to do at first to find interesting accounts and find your way around Mastodon and the Fediverse. Lately I've seen some new services to discover accounts so that might make the boarding process easier.

wakame,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews love how they show a screenshot of a json file directly on their website.

"You want to chat with your friends? Hopefully you know what JSON is."

That website looks more like a hoax than anything else.

Looking at it for the first time, some things seem nice regarding the Nostr protocol:
Your public key is basically your identity. So there is no "account", so to speak.
Relays (servers) are just data storage (for your posts).

On the other hand, it feels weird that you are supposed to manage your list of relays manually.
Or even set up your own relay to "ensure your speech is absolutely uncensorable".

atomicpoet,

@wakame @fediversenews On a technical level, I don't mind it. But there's so much spam. And when I bring this up, a lot of people on Nostr tell me, "You should pay for a relay if you want one that's moderated".

wakame,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews
I see three distinct levels(layers?) for social media and feel that they are always mixed up:

  1. The social level: How to meet people. Form communities. Moderate. Ban trolls and haters.

  2. The UX/Accessbility level: Is that app/website usable? How easy is onboarding? Does it work for people with different levels of tech knowledge? Different (dis-)abilities?

  3. The technology level: How much processing power/energy/servers are needed? Does it belong to a company? Can you run it on your own hardware? Is there encryption? It is reasonably safe/secure?

wakame,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews
And these levels influence each other. For example tying instance to social circle like in Mastodon (and apparently Nostr).

I think filtering and moderation are social "problems", so they need to be adressed on that level. Technology can only support here, but it can not solve those problems.

IMHO we should treat spam in social networks like we would IRL: Limit reach of accounts until they have shown that they can behave.

skotchygut,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews why do they frame choosing a server as some kind of immutable decision? Even if you don’t like the server that you selected it’s easy to move to a better one.

No space for that in the bullet points though. Yet plenty of space to point out how bad it is to make a decision.

randulo,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews would you like default servers any better if they were one of 20 or more general ones like .social in rotation?

atomicpoet,

@randulo @fediversenews That’s better than pushing everyone to .social.

randulo,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews I think it's worth a try and maybe Elk (which you may not like, but I do) could do that kind of thing.

atomicpoet,

@randulo @fediversenews I actually like Elk quite a lot. Now I wouldn't mind if they provided a default server -- as long as it's not mastodon.social.

waves from Universeodon.com 👋

Psst we got custom here too... 👀

atomicpoet,

@cragsand @fediversenews @randulo I love what Byron is doing, and I think he’s a net positive for the Fediverse.
