So many interesting points to contemplate about this — but one striking bit is that the Sin Eater, though apparently almost invariably a man, occupied the sort of position vis-a-vis local society that traditionally fell to women who (for one reason or another) came to be regarded as , or at least as cunning folk, healers, soothsayers and the like. Feared, shunned, avoided (until needed), yet somehow quite important to the wellbeing of the community
