Wild Strawberries are such a treat to find, truly a wonderful thing to find!

21Cabbage, in May urban foraging

Mulberries are definitely one of the few things I miss about back home. There’s some edible berries here but they aren’t as plentiful or delicious.

Maeve, in poppies petals, young bramble, linden leaves and chinese mugwort

Isn't mugwort bitter? And mildly hypnotic, which as long as you know, is fine?

I didn’t taste much bitterness which may be du to cooking it. I never heard it was hypnotic and didn’t feel any effect. I eat about a handful of it tonight and the same amount yesterday. It was the first time I eat it. Is this an effect of commun mugwort or chinese mugwort?

Maeve,

Common, I guess. I used to make a week tea of it to alleviate uterine cramping when OTC pain relievers didn't help anything, without it. https://theherbalacademy.com/blog/how-to-use-mugwort/

Oh ! Yes. Mugwort is famous to be the woman plant at least in french. Did you meant paint relieving by hyponic. I might not have understood the word correctly.

Maeve,

Nope, if you make the tea stronger, it makes you sleepy, or* it did me. But that may be because I also took it with food and ibuprofen.

I looove autocorrect*

orbweaving,

I also consider common mugwort to be a bit hypnotic. It’s worked with to produce vivid dreams, better dream recall, and lucid dreaming as well.

Interesting

Oh wow, was not aware of these at all! As a huge marshmallow fan, I’ve gotta try find these! 🙌

The ones in my front yard went from non-existent to fully uncurled in like 3 days. I missed my window again this year after vowing to get them this year after missing them last year.

downloadingcheese,

That’s a bummer. I was worried we’d find the same and almost did. One warm spell and they just shoot up.

I waited one day too long I think. Our yard is always behind the rest of the neighborhood. I think it just jumped up from the warm day

[serious] Why?

hungryphrog,

Warts and stuff like that.

Lucky! I haven’t had any luck finding them this year. They are delicious fried.

Sunny, in Almost Time for Mountain Gooseberries

Love eating gooseberries! Nice find 💚

nokturne213,

We use them as a blueberry replacement (my dad has two large patches in his yard) in muffins and pancakes.

Sunny,

Taste even better when its from the garden!

Tasty! I don’t have any edible ferns in my area but I was thinking of trying to grow some in my garden.

downloadingcheese,

I planted a few a couple years ago that had been uprooted by an overzealous road grader. They’re still going strong but haven’t spread yet. In the woods we usually find them growing close to the road where they can get out from under the tree canopy a bit.

cyborganism, in Fiddleheads

We had some Japanese friends over a couple weeks ago and I found a box at my local fruits and vegetable shop. Cooked those up with some nice steaks on the barbecue and it was amazing.

downloadingcheese,

Lucky! I’ve never seen them for sale here and most people I talk to don’t even know they’re edible

cyborganism,

Well if you can forage for them, get about four big handfuls, cut the stem close to the curl. Then here’s how I cook them:

  • Get two pots of water boiling. And keep one bowl of ice water aside.
  • blanch the fiddleheads in the first pot for 5 minutes.
  • then using a metal frying scoop, scoop them out and transfer to the second pot and blanch for another 5 min.
  • then transfer to the ice bath to stop them from cooking further.
  • heat a pan on medium heat and add butter
  • saute the fiddleheads
  • serve with salt and pepper

So good. I’ve been meaning to get out as well. I had some friends get a huge haul on the weekend.

aodhsishaj, in Collecting dandelion sap

This is what came up for me on a DDG search.

nicoleapelian.com/…/herbal-focus-dandelion-taraxa…

Hopefully it helps

hungryphrog,

Thanks, but it didn’t say anything about collecting the sap. :(

protist,

There sure are a lot of absurd pseudoscientific claims on that site. Dandelions are great to eat, but they’re not miracle drugs like this woman is trying to sell you on

notthoughtsjustcrabrave, in Wild strawberry season is here!

The kind around here taste like nothing. I’m assuming it’s the false one. Cool find.

LibertyLizard,
@LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net avatar

Yeah in certain areas the fake ones are a common lawn weed, way more common than true strawberries. But as far as I know, true strawberries are always delicious!
