nothing, Just an assumption: would mines in 1662 be near homes? If not, might someone be designated campsite attendant and another as cook? And probably countless more? Also this picture is free of today and decay, so it seems someone maybe up fitted this axe.
Jake_Farm, What would a miner need an axe for? Reinforcing braces?
FireTower, I’d assume threatening to cut down supports if the other miners didn’t mine fast enough. But your idea or maybe defending their resource from invaders might make more sense.
