Teglement,

I've been posed the same question about 'if you could only listen to one band' and I usually decide that if I were restricted to just one, I'd sooner drop the hobby altogether. Anything loses its luster after too much repetition for me.

But for the sake of actually answering the question, would have to be something that can't just be shut down, has variety in and of itself, and stands the test of time. So maybe something along the lines of Fallout 4? I know Skyrim is the darling but Fallout 4 has more actual stuff to fiddle with between base building, constant procedural questing, etc. I dunno. That's not a perfect answer, but it's in the same realm at least.

Exactly this. Like, I have favourites - but I'd wind up hating them if that was the only thing I could ever engage with from then forward.

I've found especially with games, there comes a point where if you get deep enough with a game for long enough - there are issues apparent at those levels of detail that are inevitable, and are going to drive you nuts.

No game is going to survive full-time play for a year, or ten years, and you come out the far side still loving it completely.

GlowingLantern,

I would feel the same way. Fixating on one thing would become boring after a while. That’s why I am also somewhat surprised that this isn’t a hypothetical question at all for so many people. It’s more common with tabletop RPGs, because of the financial and time investment required to learn a new system, but then again, a TTRPG arguably has more variety than any video game ever could. It just seems a bit wild to me to pay so much money for a console and only use it for one game/franchise.

1ofamillion,

I'd probably go with a Monster Hunter game (4 Ultimate most likely) or a game with a lot of customization like Elden Ring.

Factorio gang, where ya at?

niceglutes,

@GlowingLantern If I had to pick just one game, Morrowind or Super Mario RPG (maybe the new one if it’s still amazing).

If collections counted maybe the old super Mario all stars. Used to play that religiously after school at my grandparents when I was a kid.

@GlowingLantern I’d have a compilation so I could enjoy multiple titles in one package. Super Mario 3D All-Stars or the Sonic Mega Collection come to mind!

GlowingLantern,

Speaking of loopholes, I'd install a game engine and create all the games I want to play myself. There are a few of them on Steam and IIRC, the Switch has a game to teach game development (basically a simple game engine with tutorials), so technically it wouldn't be cheating.

dylondark,

Minecraft. there’s a reason why it’s the most played game in existence. it’s such a beautifully simple concept yet has infinite possibilities. it will always be fun, even after it stops getting updated

that's tough, truthfully. it would have to be either nioh or monster hunter. i logged the highest amount of hours in those, lol.

GlowingLantern,

That's also an interesting choice. What do you like about those games the most?

the amount of hours you can put in just farming for something really cool. whether it be a weapon or armor, the grind itself pays off in the end. and the combat makes you wanna grind. it's good stuff!

LordR,

Crusader Kings 3: It will get updates for years probably, has a very active modding community and you can play in vastly different scenarios. Ranging from historical to Elder Kings, Lord of the Rings and much more.

But it would at some point get bland anyways. I wold probably start to hate it at some point.

GlowingLantern,

Oh, I didn't know you could also play non-historic scenarios. I played Europa Universalis IV for a while and I always liked the alternative history part of it, but also being able to play in other settings is really cool!

LordR,

It mostly develops over time (if you start at 867 for example you often end up with Viking Great Britain and no Holy Roman Emoire.

There is also a game rule to mix up cultures and religions if I remember correctly.

The other way to get non-historic scenarios are mods.

And if you want a more historic game there is a mod called Historic Invasions that lets historical people conquer stuff. Eg El Cid conquering a part of Spain, the Assasdins or Timur.

JickleMithers,

My initial thought was something like Elder Scrolls or Fallout, but I think I would be happier in something with a robust building system. Minecraft would work but something like 7 Days to Die would work too and add a bit more challenge. Maybe Valheim, I haven't played a lot of that but the building system seemed good the little I played?

Edit: I think I would choose No Man's Sky, actually. Endless exploration and a semi decent building system.

GlowingLantern,

I would also pick something that has a rich simulation and building/design aspect. A procedural game does promise to deliver never-ending unique content, if it's made well. 🤔

PM_me_your_vagina_thanks,

Sounds like hell. I compulsively switch between games, I could never stick to one.

GlowingLantern,

Same, even if I’d concentrate on only one game for a period of time, you can bet that I’ll play other games too, once I’m finished with that one.

Seeing how I've played Slay the Spire for about 650 hours, and the only game that comes close (and almost certainly surpasses it) is Counter-Strike when I was a teen, I'd have to go with that I suppose.

Warframe probably. Or a game like Ultima Online. Something dynamic and interactive.

derin,

Hunt: Showdown. Shit’s my jam.

gk99,

I mean, the answer kinda just has to be something like Call of Duty to make sense. Think about how much evolution that series has gone through over the years, and how many components there are between campaign, multiplayer, Zombies, spec ops, battle royale, and most recently DMZ. It's probably the most variety you'd get from just one franchise.

There’s not much variety in terms of genre at that point 😔

I’d be looking at highly moddable games types—something like Gary’s Mod, maybe? I personally wouldn’t want to play an FPS forever. But I’m not sure what games these days have super strong mod communities that frequently genre-bend. Maybe something like GTA?

GlowingLantern,

I don’t know how to categorise these types of players. If it were a board game or TTRPG, they would be casual players (e.g. the people who only heard of Monopoly), but the average playtime would make them hardcore gamers. It’s weird.
