Very awesome ‼️👍🏻
The stone pile is very reduced and the dugout soil almost gone…

I have to show the end result
All stones moved. Gravel and one of the benches in place … That bench is for sitting in the shade under the bean tree on hot days when it flowers in spring and the air is full of buzzing bumblebees 🐝🐝🐝🐝

It started raining the minute that wall was finished so rest of the afternoon was spent on spreading nematodes in hope of better harvest of apples next year, weeding behind the logs and putting 1) cardboard and 2) mulched branches. Finally the gutter over the patio was rinsed, a lengthy business as it proved to be completely clogged.
It is raining really hard. Time to call it a day and go inside. Friday is indoor chores as It will rain all day

I sure don’t envy my garden help. He’s in the process of cutting down & loading park slide from my neighbors property. And pack it in tarp for delivery at the dump together with the pile behind my garage before they close at 8 pm. The trolley is completely full to the brim.

September 1:st
My blueberry bushes look like they would need pruning before winter… how and when? Anyone? @eyebeams?
Last blueberrries and first blackberries…

@gardening

eyebeams,

@sarahjelm @gardening Ours are in pots so we cut them back when repotted so they don’t grow too high but they don’t need cutting back at all usually.

@eyebeams @gardening that sounds good.. I have to tend to the bush rose behind though. It’s the old fashion style rose and it’s got both too dense and to high. I’ve read up on this and you cut down the thickest new grown stems at the bottom and anything tending to crawl away from the main mother plant. I don’t look forward to it. It’s extremely thorny.

Some things surprise though - like the 3 pieces of Jerusalem artichokes in that pot. I took the largest plastic pot I had and dug it down to keep them in place. Looks tiny now. They stick up over the 1,8 m fence …

Some of the advice for communicating with nature works well …

Ants go by smell & really HATE cinnamon When invading the logs from the old fur “hedge” cinnamon makes them move house. Also from flowerbeds or the terassed patio

I clearly understand what the wren says when loudly complaining over my ivy pruning. He actually comes up to me and tells me off, very loudly & annoyed

To trick the squirrels from visiting the wren’s nests is easy, nuts and seeds elsewhere

@donkeyherder@kolektiva.social avatar

@sarahjelm @eyebeams @gardening my Jerusalem artichokes (also safely potted) are about that tall too! They’re so vigorous it’s amazing they’re even partially edible! 💨

sarahjelm,
@sarahjelm@mastodon.social avatar

@donkeyherder @eyebeams @gardening I’ll wait until spring to get a more tender harvest. Apparently they are better in April or as soon as the soil is free from frost

sarahjelm,
@sarahjelm@mastodon.social avatar

@donkeyherder @eyebeams @gardening Just lift out the pot and empty it in the wheelbarrow, then put it back in the hole with a few of the more uneven tubes that are hard to peel

@donkeyherder@kolektiva.social avatar

@sarahjelm @eyebeams @gardening our winters are very mild. I didn’t even eat any of last year’s sunchokes because they sprouted by the time I remembered them 😂

That was one idle and restful Friday…
I’ve slept at least 12 hours all together since yesterday, read a bit, did an old crossword and simply enjoyed. Tonight I just might see that . First night it’s actually clear…

Seems most of the rain decided to come yesterday. There was only a tiny shower this morning….

Sept 7 and these are on their way to the paint shop … patio sofa and all window shutters except those under roof … that sofa will be carefully restored, antique as it is from the original furniture of the Gothenburg university building - more or less exactly 116 years old. The building opened mid September. https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universitetsbyggnaden_i_Vasaparken,_G%C3%B6teborg

Tomorrow morning it’s 7 days until the autumnal equinox and I got a photo report from the paint shop. My sofa is now dissembled. I really wish I had an indoor workshop-so envious…
The bench for the hallway is finally finished and stained, remains transparent spray lacquer, but I had to take it indoors last night. Even the wood glue refused to dry. That’s how humid it’s been. Better today, but sure a few showers-and COLD🥶

My bench for the hallway is finally in place. Just have to wait for the lacquer to dry completely before the birdseed can move into it instead of filling the stairs.
It’s been a long journey interrupted by
I’m finishing off the hallway makeover by antique treatment of a few too new and too shiny brass hooks for the wall - I’ve read up on this so lighting the grill

@sarahjelm@mastodon.social avatar

And that proved to be VERY revealing… those hooks were more suited for making 😂🥲
The amount copper must have been minimal & only present on the surface. They melted instantly. I’ll save the remains for on New Year’s Eve. So ordered new ones, less shiny & even cheaper as on sale…
Taking cat Alice out to watch the birds before getting the grass mowed. Next is more ☕️ and perhaps some lunch…

Very neat …. For the rest I’ll have to wait until all birch leaves have fallen. Shouldn’t be many days now. One more dry day to go.

I did get some help that very cold Friday last week
It was planned to be a full day, fixing patio tiles & do whatever else was left on my to-do list, but it was cut short as the guy was couching & quite ill. At 3 PM he was shivering, had a headache & said “no more gravel now is there please?”. With small children in daycare & school, (the first to fall sick at start of the school year & still home) it was probably not going home to a restful evening …

@gardening

sarahjelm, (edited )
@sarahjelm@mastodon.social avatar

So what was done in the partly rainy and very windy 5 hrs, considering …?
Quite a lot actually, but no tile fixing on the patio.
Both magnolias and the old plum tree were rid of dead branches & pruned to proper size and form. All to high for me to reach.

@gardening

sarahjelm,
@sarahjelm@mastodon.social avatar

Both stone tables got some level gravel around them to allow easy access with the grass mower. Double cloth under to suppress weeds and get a flat surface for a bench at the larger one by the azalea

@gardening

sarahjelm, (edited )
@sarahjelm@mastodon.social avatar

The irritating wine tangled in the ivy by the patio was finally cut down and the root dug up👍🏻
Two full sacks for the tip
Should have been done years ago…
The ivy is quite enough to keep in order and place!

@gardening

sarahjelm,
@sarahjelm@mastodon.social avatar

Finally, in pouring rain, the space around the little cherry tree & the plum by the hammock was cleared from grass and got manure, cardboard and mulched branches in that order and were watered generously. I can easily prune these myself, small as they are…
And that was it, time was quarter to 3 and I spent rest of the day finishing my hallway bench. Had to get my winter jacket and take breaks inside to get warm.

Next time, for leaf blowing will be in October…
He left with a huge paper bag full of all kinds of school materials like paper, erasers and unused postcards (why did I collect those ?) for the EY primary school at home where his wife teaches - better use in their after school activities than here. There sure is a budget crises with lots of cuts and budgets are tight or on minus.
I hope he’s recovering properly- I have a bit of a bad conscience…
