Somebody else's #guitar #pedal on loan.
I want one. The Jag sounds/feels like it's alive through this thing. I hear some people don't like these?
#fuzz #muff

@eyesquash
I play the white Nano version. I do push it with a Tubescreamer to bring out the mids, and this gives it a more tight and aggressive distortion character (yes, extra tap, but worth it). Muff into clean TS also works well to cut off the bass if the amp is overwhelmed by it.

And by itself into a just slightly overdriven Marshall with the right speaker, this pedal produces the mightiest roar imaginable. Sadly my current home-setup doesn't get me that sound.

@eyesquash Had to get one of these Nanos when I got back into playing :owi: Can /not/ get this sound with the modelled Muff in my multi-effects

@eyesquash Like Strats, they're great for other people but I don't get on with them. I've owned a Green Russian small font and a Blackout Effectors Musket and while I'd like the sound by itself, with a band it was an instant "mix yourself out" button. I've come to find that Fuzz Face type circuits are my jam (currently rocking the Crazy Tube Circuits Constellation OC41).

@boxspring Hmm. The article @dwenius linked said the scoopier variants disappear in a band mix. I guess you could fix that with EQ or a TS or parked wah, but that's more pedals to switch.
I hope to play with a band some day.

@eyesquash @dwenius With the Musket, it had a mids control to counteract the scoopiness, but even given that and that I was in a trio (albeit with a "full range" bassist :-) I just seemed to vanish. More power to those they work for, but I gave that circuit a couple of tries and it just isn't for me.

@eyesquash@mastodon.world avatar

@boxspring @dwenius I'm just at home trying stuff, so it's another sound I don't already have.
Thanks much for your thoughts!

@boxspring My blue Fuzz Face mini is visible to the right of the borrowed Muff. I quite like the way it cleans up with single coils. It seems like it has less oomph than the Muff.
I play at home, so I lack experience with a band or at volume.

@eyesquash @flockofnazguls Guitar tone is so subjective. Especially in the distortion family, there will always be people who dislike a particular pedal. That’s fine. If you find your bliss, you won.

@eyesquash I have a Big Muff Pi for my bass, it pretty much sounds like the platonic ideal fuzz IMO, vibrant and analog. Mine looks somewhat different (it's green), but I don't imagine it would sound vastly different

eyesquash,
@eyesquash@mastodon.world avatar

@mr_daemon Yeah, there's variants. I don't begin to understand their differences.

My friend has agreed to sell it to me.
One more fuzz pedal. That's all I need.

That Pedal Show on YT will air a video about Muffs on Friday. (Muff, haha, I know, muff, yeah, whatever)
I'm stoked. They really explain what a pedal does and how it can be useful.
