If the reason The Times covers Biden with a scalpel and Trump with a feather duster were because Biden wonā€™t do an interview, that would be nice. The truth is they also try this. Gore, Clinton, now Biden. And itā€™s because they sincerely think their job to make every election look like a coin flip.

@mcc @lolgop Whatā€™s frustrating is some of their reporters like Maggie Haberman have been doing amazing work but the NYTā€™s overall editorial framing is so damn timid and both-sidesy.

Someone on Masto put it really well: If one side says itā€™s raining and the other says itā€™s not. Your job as a journalist is not to repeat both statements, itā€™s to look out the window and see who is right.

Just a privacy reminder: if you're going to post a picture of your mail, make sure to blur or remove any barcodes on that mail. Every piece of USPS mail has a bar code with your full address on there. Zip Code + 4 extension (which is your neighborhood) + house # (which translates to your exact house).

mkb,
@mkb@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr Zip+4 doesn't necessarily specify a particular house but yes, it certainly can.

mkb,
@mkb@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr The specificity of the +4 varies widely. Yes, sometimes it is an entire neighborhood. In other cases it is a single recipient. One can even apply to get a distinct +4 code.

The miserable screamy feeling when you have an error in a program, you alter the source code, you run it again, it fails in the same way, then you look at the error message and notice the line numbers have not changed and therefore the change you made was not actually incorporated into the version of the program you ran and you don't know why

mkb,
@mkb@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc Often for me that was forgetting to save in my editor before going to the shell window to run. Eventually I had to configure every editor to auto-save when it loses focus. My favorite version of the problem is accidentally editing an entirely separate version of the source code.

it's so funny to me that a normal, understandable, two page sized python program can implement a real hardware NIC driver that someone can use for realtime work like typing in an SSH session, under concurrent heavy load, and it gives you single ms digit latency

this is the entire transmit queue code. you can look at it in its entirety on one editor screen and understand it. it uses normal python idioms and doesn't even touch USB directly

60 Mbps on CPython, 80 on PyPy

    @defaultmediatransmitter @flockofnazguls Theyā€™re both slightly tangental but 20,000 Hertz and Song Exploder are quite good.

    20KHz is about soundesign and leans toward the commercial end. Song Exploder talks with artists to pick apart how a song was made. I find the story-centric ones less interesting but the ones looking at musical or technical decisions are great.

    People on Twitter are debating whether a person using uncommon words like "delve" are trying to sound smarter than they are, or worse, are ChatGPT bots, because "normal" people don't talk like that.

    You don't have to get upset, or embroiled in the debate. Not worth the time or attention. But I'll share some important context as your friendly neighborhood Nigerian šŸ™‹šŸæā€ā™‚ļø

    Many Nigerians have bigger English language vocabularies and better command of grammar than the typical American or English person

    mkb,
    @mkb@mastodon.social avatar

    @mekkaokereke I suddenly realize I have a different standard for spoken language than I have for code and Iā€™m not sure I can justify the difference.

    With code, I assume that a future maintainer will have less context than I do and less knowledge of the language than I do (and that future maintainer might actually be me).

    With spoken language I usually assume the listener will either know the words Iā€™m using, or be willing to ask me to clarify.

    Maybe that inconsistency is a problem. Hmmā€¦
