From a money standpoint, modding guitars is basically never worth it. But there's nothing more rewarding to me than having a customized instrument that's uniquely yours.
When it comes to modifying a starter guitar it really comes down to how the thing feels to you. If you like the build quality and neck feel of your Squier, then slapping some great new parts in it is a great idea. If you don't feel like it plays well right now, then it might be a better use of money to just buy something a bit better.
That said, I have a heavily modified Squier P-Bass that I absolutely love. Seymour Duncan pickup, Warmoth roasted maple neck, new machine heads, new tone cap, spray painted white, and so on. Looks, feels, and plays great! Wouldn't trade it for anything. :)
Ok this sounds judgemental, I know, but I really don’t understand the appeal of "relic"ed guitars. I’d feel totally camp showing such a guitar to a friend. The pre-ripped Nordstrom jeans of rock.
the dings on my guitar all tell my story. How once in the airport, i pulled out my Martin during a long layover, and dinged it against a chair, how my oldest kid ran his toy car into the headstock and scratched it, how i neglected to care for the area under my elbow and over time, the sweat eroded the lacquer, etc. who on earth wants those stories made up from the factory?
Well people do say that the magnetic attraction that the pickups have on the strings can reduce sustain. Ergo, more pickups = less sustain. Whether that effect would be noticeable is debatable.
I have to say my first response to the pic was: “how much hum would a humbucker buck if a humbucker could buck hum?”.
But to answer your question, you're going to want to learn how to do power chords, and barre chords. Barre chords are going to be a bitch, but it's worth it. It's a huuuuge plateau for new guitarists to get over.
What metal is the pick guard and how did you relic it? I'm strongly considering a copper pick guard for my partscaster and trying out a variety of verdigris techniques on it.
That’s a great deal, thanks for sharing. Can’t use them myself because I prefer to keep the tension optimized setup from Strandberg, but I’ll let friends know.
Frequent “Stupid Deal of the Day” on Musicians Friend. Maybe it’s the 10-52 that come up often though. I’m stocked up with enough to last me entirely too long or I’d re-up again.
