ai6yr,

I've clearly spent too much time working with protocols and data, a "emergency form" which duplicates the same data in multiple formats (GPS, MGRS, what3words, physical address) for sending over a 300bps or 1200bps channel still bugs me.

AMS,

@ai6yr Are 8-char maidenhead locators not good enough anymore?

R2AZE,

@ai6yr Does it actually duplicate anything, though? I couldn't identify which form this is just from your screenshot, so I can't be sure what exactly it does -- but at least some of them convert coordinates. Check the XML (bleh) for what it actually sends.

The forms system is quite flexible, if almost entirely undocumented. Having a form that lets you enter coordinates in any reasonable format while only sending one is quite possible, people just don't do it as often as they should.

ai6yr,

@R2AZE Yeah, the resulting message has everything duplicated ;-)

R2AZE,

@ai6yr Well, what3words were already a warning sign, I suppose. :) Never seen anyone seriously using what3words.

ai6yr,

@R2AZE LOL I'm wrong, the coordinates are sent in *** 8 *** different versions of the same data.

R2AZE,

@ai6yr 🤦‍♂️

AMS,

@ai6yr @R2AZE :ablobcateyeroll:

ai6yr,

@AMS @R2AZE LOL so you can see, as someone who has spent months figuring out how to encode as much information into as few bits as possible (for a network protocol), you can see my OCD annoyance with that form, LOL.
