What the hell ever happened to being allowed to ignore my computer's advice?

What if I trust the website, and I know the cert has expired, or TLS is just being an ass? What if I want to use a "weak" or no password? Etc.

It's my computer, and I have my reasons.

AMS,

@falken @OpenComputeDesign @firefox Because Chrome is an Embrace-Extend-Extinguish attack on computing as a whole that pretends to be a browser.

Too much truth on the internet today.

@hacks4pancakes I weep in works-with-folks-in-CET (I'm in US Central time).

Parts for the BaseT1 passive tap came in! There's a few more SMAs and some pin headers (nothing super exciting) and a lot of parts for other future projects.

But this one is a bit more interesting, let's have a look! Mini-Circuits ADCB-20-82+ dual directional coupler. 1-800 MHz, 20 dB IL.

Since it's a dual directional coupler it gives you taps in both the forward and reverse direction. I may respin my BaseT passive tap around this as well, since it's so much smaller than the one I used there.

From the top at low mag, not a whole lot to see. Just a white box with some markings.

AMS,

@azonenberg This looks like the classic transformer thing used at HF in a bunch of ham stuff. I've always looked at it like a current transformer feeding from the through current (green) to the reflected port that is them summed with a voltage ratio measured by the same turns ratio on the right core. They're dependent on the thru impedance and the coupled fwd/rev terminations being the same otherwise the current and voltage sum won't do what you want (fwd = ratio * thru, rev = ratio * reflected)

Someone offered me a Star Wars Lego set to do a sales call for a product we also sell, and damn my ethics

AMS,

@hacks4pancakes On one hand, wasting their time and taking their money. On the other hand "competitive market research". On the gripping hand, legos.

@malwaretech Probably more folks here have dealt with horrors like 24-bit chars before.

If any STMicro engineers follow me, I have a challenge for you.

Release a new STM32, any size, in which at least one IO bank is contiguous on die (i.e. Px0 - Px15 are on adjacent bond pads with no other pins in between them aside from Vdd/Vss) and, on packaged chips, is placed in at least roughly the same corner of the package.

AMS,

@azonenberg Hell some QFN or 1mm or .8mm BGA with <200 pins (full breakout on 2 routing layers with 6/6 or larger) and more than one IO voltage bank would be the dream. And I'll take any MCU with good SVD and GCC/LLVM support, doesn't need to be ST.

100/1000baseT1 to baseT media converter schematic done and review complete (although if anyone else wants to have a look, the sch is at https://www.antikernel.net/temp/baset1-media-converter.pdf).

181 components, pretty small compared to most of my recent designs that are pushing well above 500.

Starting layout now, should be pretty straightforward.

AMS,

@azonenberg Putting a chassis ring around the outside edge on all 4 layers to hook to the ESD stuff might still be useful.

I already have a heat pump water heater... however, if I did not, I'd seriously look at what the rebates are on them right now in Ventura and Santa Barbara County... $3,100 - $7,300 per unit - Residential Unitary, Single Family Heat Pump Water Heater rebates. (that should cover both the unit and installation). #energy #EnergyEfficiency #power #grid https://incentives.switchison.org/rebate-profile/tech-clean-california-residential-unitary-single-family-hpwh

AMS,

@__josh @VirginiaHolloway @1nd33d @militant_matt @ai6yr If you have it in a basement where you were previously running a dehumidifier 9mo of the year it is basically free to run.

I am gonna take the, “did we even watch the same show as the ultra conservative and fascist people saying ‘Trek/Wars/Who has gone ‘woke’” even further, and go with there are pretty much three kinds of successful sci-fi serials:

~dystopian or subversive ones making pretty obvious commentary about fascism

-ones with some slight hope for the human future that have always made at least a little social commentary about how we could make things more egalitarian and open for POC, women, gay people, etc

~shitty space marines with generally poor writing that made ad revenue

And the first two flew over way too many chuckleheads’ noggins.

    AMS,

@hacks4pancakes And now I'm wondering where to categorize the "Air Force spreads Freedom to the Galaxy, but all moral like, with cameos by the actual SecDef"...

@g4dbn @bloor @simonzerafa MWh is a decent unit of energy if you're measuring power in MW. MW/hr is a legit unit for ramping rate of generation (e.g. duck curve). That document seems to be using neither.

as an American I was viscerally confused today to see Trader Joe’s with Dutch labeling in a corner supermarket that only stocks generic cheap brands

(I can only explain Trader Joe’s to someone not from the US as aimed at the Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton demographic)

    AMS,

@0xabad1dea TJ's is the other Aldi, but aimed a bit more upmarket, for those who want whole foods (pre Bezosmart) but think it's a bit pricey.
