They want you to buy two mice so your $40 wire can be charging your $90 shitty magic mouse that can’t be used when it’s charging because the ports on the bottom.

Things like this dumb mouse and how it is created are most likely created like that on purpose. Not sure what that purpose is, but it is. I’m pretty sure a massive company like apple know this is a very dumb product.

smallaubergine,

The purpose is they don't want users to leave the mouse permanently plugged in. That would leave an ugly wire to their beautiful wireless product. in my opinion the only pointing device apple ever got right was the trackpad. Their mice have been absolute crap since the iMac g3 hockey puck mouse days. During the G4 era they had that transparent pill looking mouse, then the pill with the ball scroller that would collect hair. Then magic mouse and now this. Consistently bad since the early 2000s is actually quite impressive.

gregorum,

Leaving at permanently plugged in would destroy the battery life. That’s why.

smallaubergine,

That could easily be rectified by proper battery management firmware

LaSaucisseMasquee,

Pure copium right there.

Apple makes 3nm CPUs but hasn’t tackled the challenge of turning off charging when the battery is full.

gregorum,

They were designed about 10 years apart. These 2 things are not the same.

agressivelyPassive,

But why not add at least something resembling a reasonable charging option? Like a QI mat, a magnetic holder/charger, etc.

You could even add extremely low power charging to the flanks of the keyboard, so that it charges by being close to the keyboard.

hansl,

Just QI charging support (MagSafe) would be terrific. I don’t know if the footprint would allow it, but it would be so easy with all the phone wireless chargers out there. Just drop it on for lunch break instead of plugging it in.

I don’t mind the cable, I charge it about once a month for lunch break. But that would be a game changer.

lordnikon,

Desktops in general don’t make sense for apple. it would only make sense if they were a tech company but they are not they are a Luxury Fashion company. it’s not about what you do with your computer it’s how you look doing it. Apple has more in common with Louis Vuitton than HP

paddirn,

They gave us one at work, so I have one for that, but I really don’t like using it. I actually wanted to like it, but I just don’t like how it functions. I feel alot more wrist fatigue from using it and find myself accidentally clicking with it more often when I don’t intend to. There’s also some specific software we use that doesn’t play nice with it. Mine just uses batteries though, so I don’t have the charging issue. I really only bring mine around as a spare mouse, if for some reason I don’t feel like breaking out my ridiculous swiftpoint Z gaming mouse that I normally use.

gramie,

I think that one of the issues is weight. Batteries add an awful lot of weight to a mouse. If you use a wired mouse, it’s unbelievable how light it is. That could definitely improve your wrist problems.

JohnSwanFromTheLough,

Nothing worse than a light mouse though.

gregorum,

This is legitimate criticism of the mouse. I don’t like it for the same reason: I had carpal tunnel issues with it, as well as unintentional swiping and clicking issues.

gregorum,

Just charge it one of the 10 times it tells you the battery is low as you leave the office, and you won’t have to deal with it when the battery actually dies. It’s not that complicated.

hal_5700X,
@hal_5700X@lemmy.world avatar

What if it needs charging in middle of work?

darvocet,

That would be because you failed to charge it one of the 10 times it warned you the battery was low. It has exceptional battery life, easily goes a week or more on a single charge. Just plug it in periodically when you are ‘not’ working.

hal_5700X,
@hal_5700X@lemmy.world avatar

Why not put the changing port at a better spot? So the user don’t need worry about it.

darvocet,

I’m not saying that wouldn’t be better, but i get the ‘ascetics’ may be the main goal. It’s a wireless mouse, intended to be used wirelessly.

I’m fine with the touchpad on my MacBook and really only use this if I’m like airplaying across the room. The charger on the bottom has never been a problem for me.

It has an off on switch and so when you switch it off, you could plug it in.

Is it the best mouse in the world? No. But it’s fine and the location of the port isn’t a deal breaker in my eyes.

sky,

Thank you! It’s a fine mouse, the battery lasts legitimately months of use, and it recharges enough to use for the day in a minute. People just like yelling about Apple.

My G Pro Superlight has a charge port on the front and I never use it while charging because it isn’t pleasant to use that way, with tension from the cable. I just go pee and come back and it’s charged plenty.

smallaubergine,

I think you mean aesthetic not ascetic

darvocet,

Yep Ty

Player2,

“you’re holding it wrong”

RampantParanoia2365,

How about “just” not putting the port on the bottom?

gregorum,

Plug it in for, like, five minutes and go take a pee break. It’ll be good for about six hours.
