If you own one record, it's probably "Kind of Blue" (1959). Second time changed music, this time by putting George Russell's modal music theory up front for an entire album

"Kind of Blue" isn't just the best-selling instrumental jazz record of all time, or the one that's on every top ten list. Even though advances in music usually come across as noise, it's also one of the best for beginners.
