Can someone explain the difference between the upvote and the boost here on kbin?
Also, if I upvote, the up arrow changes color, so if I find the article later I can see I upvoted it, with the boost button it doesn't happen, so I can never remember if I already boosted the article or not...
Boosts used to be in the place of upvotes, now they are separate. For example, upvoting on Kbin acts as favoriting/liking on Mastodon, and boosting on Kbin acts as boosting on Mastodon.
Then maybe an example with Twitter? Not sure how to explain it without using an example. Upvoting is like liking a tweet, boosting is like retweeting a tweet. I don't know how boosts are displayed on Kbin though
An upvote (favourite) only tells the author of the items that you liked it. On Lemmy/KBin it doesn't really do much apart from get displayed.
A boost shares the item with all your followers and on KBin is also drives the ordering of posts i.e. whether it's at the top of a magazines hot section.
I'm thinking that may change as it's not intuitive that the upvote/downvote toggles don't do that.
the problem with a downvote system like this is that downvotes arent really supported outside of Lemmy/kbin (there's also a dislike button in Friendica, but I am not sure how it works), so upvotes will dominate the upvote/downvote ratio on posts almost every time because of users that are on microblogging platforms (Mastodon, Misskey, etc.) that only have an option to like a post (upvote)
