How does the federation work (and is it on yet)?

First of all, I hope this is the right place to ask this. If not, I'm sorry.

Now to my question. I understand that within fediverse I can interact with other instances - not just kbin instances but also other networks like Lemmy. What I don't understand is how to do it with my current account here on kbin.social. Like how do I go for example to Lemmy.world and comment there, post there or subscribe to a community there? And can I even do that?

Thanks in advance for explanation, I'm still new to all of this and it's kinda hard to wrap my head around it.

Aesthesiaphilia,

You have to comment on lemmy.world from within your kbin.social account. It means you can't just go to https://lemmy.world/ in your browser and post.

If you're logged into kbin.social, you can search for communities on lemmy.world. Then when you find them, you can click on the community and it will bring you to the lemmy.world community from within your kbin.social account.

My process is to:

  1. find the community on https://lemmy.world/

  2. on the sidebar of the community, say I found https://lemmy.world/c/blurrypicturesofcats, it will say something like "You are not logged in. However you can subscribe from another Fediverse account, for example Lemmy or Mastodon. To do this, paste the following into the search field of your instance: !blurrypicturesofcats"

  3. copy "blurrypicturesofcats@lemmy.world"

  4. go back to kbin.social and hit the search button, then type "blurrypicturesofcats@lemmy.world" into the search bar

  5. the blurrypicturesofcats community will pop up, then you can click on it and start posting

Aesthesiaphilia,

Also, there's a SIGNIFICANT delay in posts from one community (like lemmy.world) showing up on other communities (like kbin.social). Like 5 hours. That's why if you go to https://lemmy.world/c/blurrypicturesofcats you'll see a bunch of posts, but if you look at the same community from within kbin.social (following the steps I posted) you'll see no posts.

I've been hearing that this is a temporary issue due to the influx of people. I hope so.

It's normally not slow. but kbin.social is having a massive influx of people, and thus issues notably with cloudflare and federation. Normally it's near-instant lol. In a few days it should clear up I think? we'll see...
