bennypr0fane,

I’m kinda seeing this meme every month somewhere. It’s old, but always valid

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Top news is sad.

Bottom news is uplifting.

Psythik,

5 deaths is a tradgey. 500 deaths is a statistic.

JizzmasterD,

Do we get the news we deserve?

Bismarck,

fuck em both

kaea,

It’s not media’s fault that people don’t give a shit about immigrants. They write about stuff that people are willing read

Brocken40,

They write stuff their corporate overloads want us to read

kaea,

Maybe I’m just a shitty person but I can easily tell which topic here is more interesting.

It is important to know what is happening with immigrants too tho

15Redstones,

Most people here wouldn’t have heard about the migrant boat at all if the submarine story hadn’t happened.

mah,

I’m sure that submarine was running windows 10 and the driver accidentally switched to xinput on the F710 controller (you can’t do xinput on windows 10 for some reason)

TPMJB,

Well the billionaires weren’t in the process of breaking any laws at the time. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Grimm,

Show me a billionaire that’s never broken a law.

Dungeondaddyd20,

Not immigrants, just the poor in general.

It's because 100s of migrants drowning at sea is something horrible that regular people can't do anything about. It makes us sad, and angry. Just like almost every other story about billionaire greed and the coming climate disaster.

Now, a bunch of ultra rich, regulation hating, planet destroying losers dying in a tiny submersible because they have the kind of money to go see the titanic for fun? That's the kind of story that makes us feel good. It's karma.

30isthenew29,

Goddammit😂

FrowingFostek,

I wish everyone had this kind of class solidarity 👍🏽

tetris11,

it’s also not that many migrants coming in ~ half a million over the last decade or so[1].

We have severe labor shortages in this country, and since we’re not upping wages, why not let them stay and work. Give them citizenship and they’ll even pay taxes, which is more than can be said for the ultra-rich in this land.

Venutianxspring,

I like your view on the situation. Eat the rich

misterzero,

Technically the ocean will eat the rich...

30isthenew29,

In the end we will all be feeding the fishies.

Maggoty,

Oh no it's so much worse than a random boat sinking in the night. The Greek Coast Guard was there and did nothing until after the boat went down. Despite calls for aid. There are also allegations they actively caused the sinking by trying to push the boat away from national waters.

PersnickityPenguin,

The Greeks have been causing ships to sink in the Mediterranean for some 5,000 years. Its almost not a novelty anymore.

pascal,

Be glad this time they didn’t set the boat on fire like in the old times.

fattylumpkin,

We will be seeing this more and more in Europe generally. Europeans seem to have tired of economic immigrants and the problems and expense they bring.

skogens_ro,

I disagree it's a media thing. It has been covered. It's just not an unusual story so people don't share it as much.

Now billionaires dying on a submarine will get shared plenty. People love those stories. So naturally, you'll see more about it.

randomaccess2112,

To be honest, I think the focus is more on the context of the tragedy of the Titanic and the dangers of high-risk tourism, especially as we get close to space tourism, than a general focus on rich people in danger - like, it's not a Gabby Petito thing. It is true, literally no one cares about immigrants.

Ertebolle,

It’s unusual, and taps into some deep-seated fears - people imagine themselves trapped in a submarine running out of air, get seriously frightened, and start desperately hoping they make it out OK just because they don’t want to think about the alternative.

There’s also the Colossal Fuck Up angle - people love stories about incredibly stupid disasters because it makes them feel smart and competent. “I’d never get in a submarine that uses a shitty Logitech controller” they say, congratulating themselves on their foresight. (Even more satisfying when the victims include a billionaire, because those are the very best people to feel superior to)

CharmOffense,

Thats the thing about news: anything you see in the news is stuff that doesn’t happen. If it happens all the time, or even just reasonably frequently, it’s just by definition not news, and nobody is going to talk about it, seek it out, or pay any attention to it.

The number of people who died was newsworthy. The fact people have become so desensitized to migrant deaths is just more reason to cover it.
