Vanilla OS 2 Orchid will be released "very soon"

Original message from the Vanilla OS Discord announcment, from @mirkob1:

For those asking for Vanilla OS 2 Orchid’s release date, the simple answer is: soon, very soon.

While the full one is: please let us work with no rush, Orchid has a complex structure, introduces new paradigms and we want to be sure that everything works the best before releasing.

Was vos 2 going to have kde for de or not.

russjr08,

Officially it will release with GNOME, but others might make a KDE spin.

Ahh ok I heard on reddit they would but that a while ago

Guenther_Amanita,

Very exited!

I don’t plan to use it personally (Silverblue enjoyer here), but I can definitely see it as a more future-oriented alternative to Mint, especially for beginners.

It seems to have a similar philosophy (user friendly and stable), with the difference that it might be more suited for younger users that aren’t spoiled by traditional desktop workflows (Windows, KDE, etc.) yet.

My generation (those younger than 25) grew up using phones and tablets and will appreciate a simple, immutable system with Gnome way more than those who are older.

Cossty,

Very soon is less than a month in my book. As far as I know they still don’t have beta, they only had alphas, so…

authed,

Why is this post about discord… Or is that an ad

merci3,

Really like this distro, waiting for Orchid so I can finally stop hopping

just_another_person,

Want to lay down a few of those reasons? Hard to tell with all the marketing hype WHAT exactly this distro is unique for, and why people should bother trying.

Edit: found this which answered my questions. distrowatch.com/weekly-mobile.php?issue=20230116#…

TeryVeneno,

There’s the link you posted but there’s also a lot more, I think the latest blog post on their site (as of this comment) has all the new stuff. I recommend checking that out for up to date info.

It’s an immutable distro that simplifies running Android apps and containers for software from other distributions. It uses it’s own tool for immutability called ABRoot that also allows you to safely install native packages when needed.

merci3,

Oh, I was getting ready to answer you but it seems like candle_lighter already did it for me, and you managed to find your own answers :)

To put it in few words: I just like how Vanilla’s implementation of immutability makes it so simple to use.
