New Lemmy version released, Please give updates on upgrade for this instance.

As many of you already know Lemmy has a new version. V 0.18.3 This brings quite a few features, notably :

  • reducing database size by around 80%
  • new logic for determining comment default language (no, this doesn’t remove ‘undetermined’ as the default language but does mention it may be a possibility in the future.)
  • infinite scroll user option (opt-in not enabled by default thankfully.)

Full changelog here. First of all, thanks to the admins for keeping the server up and allowing us to have the awesome experience. Secondly, it would be great to have some updates on when we are upgrading, thanks.

I was running dev for the week and a half on, no.lastname.nz, before 0.18.3-rc.x came out. I can’t say I’ve had any real issues on 0.18.3, except the nested comments bug.

favrion,

Lemmy World is down. Again. Please stop this from happening. Thank you.

yoz,

Best way to avoid such issue is to move to a small instance. I moved to aussie.zone and never been happier. Its fast and responsive. Feels so much snappier when commenting and posting. Try it, you won’t regret it.

favrion,

I’m not from Australia, but I appreciate the suggestion.

yoz,

You dont have to be in Australia. Search for any instance here - lemmyverse.netwhich has less users, recent update and good uptime. Join and subscribe to communities in lemmy.world or any other instance.

favrion,

I know how to search for them, but I’m not from Australia so it seems irrelevant to me.

neo2478,

My dude(ette) they are saying for you to pick any smaller instance with good uptime and recent updates. Not the Australian one specifically.

Any of those smaller instances are likely to be faster than the much bigger ones.

sugar_in_your_tea,

And nothing is stopping you from joining the Australian one either. Yeah, you’ll get a bit more latency, but it’s not going to matter much for something like lemmy.

atzanteol,

I’ve thought about joining a smaller instance too but I’m not from Australia either.

(/s where needed)

Deschanel2027,

Lemmy World is down. Again.

Well, at the moment, sh.itjust.works is down for me several times a day too… It happens more and more often :-(

This is particularly worrying when I validate a post or message that took me a long time to compose. It is now so, that I have to type and save what I compose inside a text editor first. I do it for posts, but if I have to do it for comments too, that will be too much inconvenience.

can,

FYI for the most up to date info on this type of thing the instance matrix chat is the place to be.

Though it is still good to ask here for those who don’t want to bother joining.

for some reason i am unable to find the infinite scroll user option, does anyone else see that?

Zetaphor,

The infinite scroll feature is not yet implented in the UI, it’s only been added to the backend

EpicGamer,

Nice, you know you are doing something good when CCP sympathizers are after you. Keep it up 👍

Snipe_AT,

Thank you kind soul.

can,

Do you append that to the end of all your comments manually now?

Snipe_AT,

i do, and it’s annoying lol. everyday i get closer and closer to acquiescence.

database migrations will take a while for big instance, but other than that - smooth sailing.

TheDude,

Hey all, I’m always excited to upgrade to the latest versions that become available. Unless the upgrade is related to security I will tend to wait a few days to give other instances a chance to share their experiences. Before upgrading I usually go over the issues that have been submitted to help understand the risks and solutions to mitigate them.

That being said the new version does bring in a whole bunch of performance gains (mostly related to the database) that i’m looking forward to.

Lemmy.world is due to upgrade later today and I plan on upgrading shortly after them (either Monday or Tuesday).

I will put up a notification up prior to the upgrade.

Thanks

sugar_in_your_tea,

Thanks! You rock!

spez,

Thanks man! as @sugar_in_your_tea has said, you rock!

RunAwayFrog, (edited )

There is also a serious bug regarding contexts and replies BE | UI.

Not rushing to update is proving to be very wise

RunAwayFrog,

Holding off from updating is probably advisable at this point, at least until the effects of blanket sanitization on input are better understood. Three issues [1]|[2]|[3] have been already discovered, and there is probably more to come, as the change doesn’t appear to have been well thought out.

RunAwayFrog,

There is the option to upgrade with the sanitization commit reverted of course.
