As for my city, we have decently sized conventions and even a dedicated Anime/Manga-style "cultural exchange mascot" courtesy of our biggest book store....
Which website or app do you use to track new chapter releases? I use kenmei.co ( https://www.kenmei.co/ ) but I'm not happy with the number of supported sites. I also tried Tachiyomi but the updating process often fails due to mangadex call rate limits.
