So, this was helpful.

What I've been trying to do is get myself to WANT to do the thing, but this is wrong. What I need to do is to start doing the thing despite NOT WANTING to do it, which will actually set up the reward circuit to make me want to do it in the future.

The inverse would apply for quitting a bad habit. You need to stop despite not wanting to and eventually the motivation for the vice will be extinguished.
