Phone/computer screens in movies and TV series

What do you think about screens in movies and television?
Personally, I hate it, and have abandoned many productions because of it.
In most cases:

  • you can see that they are artificial
  • interfaces don’t make sense. Often the cursor is missing, etc.

But Searching and Missing showed that if there are willingnesses, it is possible not only to prepare well, but to base an entire film on them.

Dicska,

Speaking of the UI: blegh. I’m probably the minority in this, but my hands clench into a fist whenever I see a super flashy, super spectacular animation with zero input tabs, stuff zooming-rotating-panning-cropping while someone isn’t even touching the mouse (touchpad), just clickety-click, typing away into the void. But not just the lack of cursor (or most often, an entire input field): the fact that characters mash the keyboard for something that would otherwise need a mouse.

I used to hate fake programs, but I understand that there are legal/financial reasons not to use a real one, so I don’t expect that anymore, and I do a notbadobama face whenever I see a genuine browser/OS.

Now, I also understand that watching a stationary screen while someone slowly fills a field is not too exciting, and you need to bring in dynamic elements. But just like with conversations, you can show the user more, and zoom out of the screen a bit. I liked what Minority report did to make everything flashy and moving with all those projected photos and hand gestures. They even made some sense.

schmidtster,

Would take away from the realism if screen didn’t exist. Would seem like an alien world depending on the lore.

A lot don’t look artificial, maybe it’s an issue of low quality content or the resolution you’re watching.

Them not making sense maybe how it fits the lore of the particular story, not everything has to be exactly how you expect it to be.
