LibertyLizard, Love seeing the home town make some good headlines nationally for once.
Unfortunately Katie Valenzuela who introduced this bill was just defeated in the recent election. Lost by only 500 votes with 8% turnout. People don’t like the direction of the country but won’t show up to support those fighting to make it better.
return2ozma, You can thank Adam Schiff for forcing MAGA Republicans out to vote so he wouldn’t have to face off against Porter.
hesusingthespiritbomb, If the turnout was 8 percent, I’m pretty sure most of the MAGA republicans stayed home too.
LibertyLizard, There’s very few of them in the city so they could have had higher turnout but I don’t know.
Garbanzo, 8% turnout
92% of the population deserves whatever they end up with
FlyingSquid, You’re talking about a country where Republicans have spent decades telling people their votes don’t actually matter. That’s what we’re fighting against.
LibertyLizard, Well they definitely don’t deserve it but I do wish they would pay a bit closer attention to what’s going on around them. On the other hand they live in an exploitative system that leaves little time or space for the human connections that could help build consciousness. It is a thorny issue.
jmcs, Of course they deserve it. Democracies give a great power to the people, and with great power comes great responsibility. If people neglect their responsibility they deserve the consequences.
vaultdweller013, With loathing in my heart and hatred in mine heart, I will suppress both and say good job Sacramento ya sanctimonious bastards y’all did good.
FlyingSquid, I’m so glad for my trans friends that there is a safe place for them to go, but so sad that it’s necessary at all.
AnotherAttorney, The transgender sanctuary city policy will restrict staff from using time or money on efforts from outside states' legal action against people seeking gender-affirming care.
Has this even happened? Sounds like it would be pretty quickly ruled unconstitutional under the commerce clause.
HopeOfTheGunblade, What, you mean like Texas demanding records from other states? Yes. It's happened.
kellyaster, That’s awesome, right on Sacramento! 🏳️⚧️
Cogency, 🏳️⚧️
Pan_Ziemniak, 🏳️⚧️
TacoNot, Ahead of the council vote, there was a faceoff between supporters and opponents. Moms For Liberty held a protest outside city hall.
Moms for Liberty is protesting liberty. What a time to be alive
wise_pancake, Famously the statue of Liberty says " Bring us your wealthy, your heterosexual whites, Your Christian elite yearning to breathe free"
oo1, Hah, Dirty Blvd by Lou Reed:
Give me your hungry, your tired, your poor - I'll piss on 'em
That's what the Statue of Bigotry says
Your poor huddled masses, let's club 'em to death
And get it over with and just dump 'em on the boulevard
wise_pancake, It hurts to read this because the original poem is so beautiful.
Zorsith, Sadly I think the original poem has always been a lie. We’ve historically treated all immigrants like a subhuman species; black people, the Irish, and jews, in particular. (Antisemitism being frowned upon is a relatively new thing)
jeffw, They won’t give trans people over to ICE or?
Jokes aside, this is a great move. Idk if “sanctuary city” is the right term though.
FlyingSquid, There’s a genocide going on.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transgender_genocide#United…
A city fighting that genocide would be a city that offers sanctuary- a sanctuary city.
SpaceNoodle, They’re certainly persecuted by other states.
jeffw, Sure, but the term “sanctuary city” applies to protection from ICE or other immigration/deportation activities
BolexForSoup, I feel like everybody understands what this is and this entire debate is nitpicky with no real end goal in mind.
LibertyLizard, Not necessarily. It was frequently used that way during the Trump administration but sanctuary doesn’t have to be specific to a certain group of people to qualify.
PrinceWith999Enemies, The term is appropriate. The Texas AG demanded information on trans persons from other states.
