nerdetry:

I have a pretty developed and deliberate approach to the photos I make, in that I generally have a fairly clear vision of the final result I want to achieve when I'm capturing something, even for details like contrast and tonality.

Except for color toning. I almost never have any idea whether I will add a sepia tint or whatever. I'm totally ad hoc and inconsistent about this, and I often go back and forth several times before settling on a final version.

I will say I that when I do want to add a tint, I like the tools in Capture One for this much more than I do those in Photoshop. Capture One makes it easy to apply a slightly different hue and intensity to highlights and shadows. (The Black and White tool, under "split tones").

Some people have strong, categorical opinions about toning B&W images (those who are most vocal are more often negative, as far as I can tell). But I just don't have a strong opinion about this, and it seems like an inherently case-by-case decision.

@mattblaze That thing you do, that you've spent countless hours working on? I've decided that you're doing it wrong.

@mattblaze I don’t get it. I just don’t get it. Apparently, they can’t just scroll by? They have to take a crap in your TL? I just don’t get it. Is someone forcing them to look at pictures?

@Catawu I should be clear that no one is complaining about me (as far as I know), just about toning in general.

@mattblaze

The person I know who used to critique colorizing B&W seemed mainly to object to people colorizing other’s work, especially historical photos. It seems like if you as the photographer decide to do that, it’s fair as you’re the creator.

@wa7iut Oh, I totally agree about colorizing (or even just toning) other people's work without permission. That should be uncontroversially not cool.
