New toy just showed up in the mail... It's my beta ThunderScope!

Will start playing with it after work but here's some quick unboxing pics.

Black Pelican case labeled "ThunderScope" with "made in Canada" "OSHW", and "EEVengers" logos on it
Black instrument case in foam cutout with four BNCs on one side and two on the other, labeled "ThunderScope Beta 2"

If you got upset at me for pointing out that more people died of Covid under Biden than Trump, in large part because Biden rolled back common sense restrictions that were in place under Trump...

Then you'll hate me pointing out that Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs, and Biden is upping that to 100% tariff.

This is about an hour away from my farm, so this'll be a fun conversation, and yet another great opportunity to tell a lot of people about what a huge problem we have with unregulated commercialization of orbit. (Also I just redid my slides for my public talk next week, this is going in!)

back in the late 70s my dad got involved in the recovery of nuclear material spread around northern Canada by a failed Russian satellite.

wa7iut,
@wa7iut@mastodon.radio avatar

@sundogplanets

yes, he was involved in understanding nuclear proliferation on the technical level. He was at the U.S. DOE Pacific Northwest Lab at the time, later at Los Alamos. I'm sure there was an interest in collecting nuclear signatures (nuclear intelligence), cleaning up, and security issues since it probably was plutonium.

Did I mention the satellite I worked on in grad school at Johns Hopkins/Naval Research Labs got shot down? 😱

Got the electronet out and set up, and now all the 4 legged animals are out on grass for the first time this year! They are sooooo happy. (And the llama doesn't seem to have any thoughts of escape, so that's great).

A herd of over a dozen white goats with a couple of brown and black goats sprinkled in. They are 100% concentrating on eating. They are in a bright green grassy area, with a tall wooden fence, tall spruce trees, and a large old yellow barn in the background. There are lovely poofy clouds in a bright blue sky above.

Listen, if you’re a white person, and you think you’ve had Szechuan food, you probably haven’t.

Most of the Szechuan restaurants in the USA lack a basic component: spiciness.

I say this because a friend from out of town just went to a Szechuan restaurant in Vancouver, thought it was going to be business as usual, and now he’s doubled over because the spice is too much for him.

He tells me, it’s so bad, that he feels the spice eking out of his pores. 🤣

The overhead for the AI on a minecraft ant is so great that the mod creators limit the colonies to just 20 ants to prevent lag. Fine for gameplay 20 feels like a lot.

Interesting the kind of things they do: remember the location of their nest, find a path back, collect leaves etc. are so taxing.

In the real world a colony of 1000+ is typical. Some colonies have millions of ants. And real ants have much more to "process" Kind of gives you a sense of the scale of the intelligence of a colony.

#photography nerdetry:

I have a pretty developed and deliberate approach to the photos I make, in that I generally have a fairly clear vision of the final result I want to achieve when I'm capturing something, even for details like contrast and tonality.

Except for color toning. I almost never have any idea whether I will add a sepia tint or whatever. I'm totally ad hoc and inconsistent about this, and I often go back and forth several times before settling on a final version.

wa7iut,
@wa7iut@mastodon.radio avatar

@mattblaze

The person I know who used to critique colorizing B&W seemed mainly to object to people colorizing other’s work, especially historical photos. It seems like if you as the photographer decide to do that, it’s fair as you’re the creator.

A console is not a replacement for a GPU card.

A GPU card is a discrete component from a CPU. It has dedicated VRAM. You can remove it from your machine and replace it with a different GPU.

Meanwhile, modern consoles pretty much just have APUs. Don’t get me wrong, they have decent APUs. However, an APU in a console is not a GPU card replacement – because it is neither discrete nor replaceable.

New thread on my big ongoing embedded project since the other one was getting too big.

To recap, this is a pilot project for a bunch of my future open hardware T&M and networking projects, validating a common platform that a lot of the future stuff is going to run on.

The primary problem it's trying to address is that I have a lot of instrumentation with trigger in/out ports, sometimes at different voltage levels, and I don't always have the same instrument sourcing the trigger every time.

So rather than moving around cables all the time and adding splitters, attenuators, amplifiers, etc. to the trigger signals I decided to make a dedicated device using an old XC7K70T-2FBG484 I had lying around.

Of course, as with any project, there was feature creep.

I'm standardizing on +48V DC for powering all of my future projects as it's high enough to move a lot of power but low enough to be mostly safe to work around live. So I needed to design and validate an intermediate bus converter to bring the 48 down to something like 12 for the rest of the system to use.

The FPGA has four 10G transceiver pairs on it. I used one for 10GbE (not that I need the bandwidth, but I was low on RJ45 ports on this bench and had some free SFP drops) and the rest are hooked up to front panel SMA ports (awaiting cables to go from PCB to panel) to generate PRBSes for instrument deskew.

Since I'm pinning out the transceivers and am planning to build a BERT eventually, I added BERT functionality to the firmware as well (still need to finish a few things but it's mostly usable now).

And since I have transceivers and access to all of the scope triggers, it would be dumb not to build a CDR trigger mode as well. That's in progress.
