My father
Kept his rage
Behind his teeth,
Pulled a life out of
Quiet sorrow,
Taught me how to
Break cleanly at a
Defect,
Leave no edge jagged,
Wear the shrapnel
Like armor.
He swallowed
His heart,
Cut his tongue
On the unsaid,
And my mother
Laughed.
