MCD sent it an email about this last week I think.

Astroturfed, in Portland man must give up ownership of dog Bubbie that mauled runner, attacked poodle

I like how it smoothly glossed over the fact that the owner seems to be a homeless opioid addict?

Anticorp, in Portland man must give up ownership of dog Bubbie that mauled runner, attacked poodle

What a tragic story for everyone involved, including the dog. Pitbulls are very sweet, loyal, and loving dogs. They also have a genetic predisposition towards territorialism, and canine aggression. They require experienced owners who will give them adequate socialization as puppies, and ongoing exercise, mental stimulation, and training. They make excellent companions when raised properly, but can exhibit undesirable and dangerous behaviors without the right training and socialization.

    Citation needed.

    Anticorp,

It must be noted that dog aggression can develop even in well-socialized Am Staffs; an AmStaff should never under any circumstances be left alone with other dogs.

You can find that under the “training needs” section on the AKC profile page: www.akc.org/…/american-staffordshire-terrier/

I kinda disagree that they can’t be left unsupervised with other dogs. I think it depends on the individual pitty. Some of them have really friendly personalities. But who am I to argue with the AKC?

I don’t see the territorial behavior mentioned there, but it’s well documented elsewhere that they’re protective of their territory, and suspicious of strangers in their home until their owners make it clear that they’re okay. They make pretty good guard dogs. I’m sure you can find that information with a little searching. They’re great dogs though, as long as they have experienced owners.

    Kiosade,

I feel like for breeds like pit bulls and german shepherds, you should have to undergo a series of courses and training to be able to own one. My family had a GSD when I was a kid, and looking back, we had no business having one. She was awesome at times, but was a brat, and a few times she even attacked my friends (lightly) and our other dog. Still have a small scar from when I deflected her away during one of those attacks.

PizzasDontWearCapes, in Portland man must give up ownership of dog Bubbie that mauled runner, attacked poodle

Miller suggested that Wakerhauser must have done something to agitate his dog, fallen or possibly slapped it. He questioned if Bubbie was trying to “kiss” the runner.

“Maybe she freaked him out…I don’t believe that he would’ve mauled her. He might have got scared,” Miller said. “I’m super sorry about what happened…He’s a wonderful pup. He’s a great dog.”

Another case where a dog owner completely misunderstands how dogs behave and react to strangers

  • thisisawayoflife,

Oh, I don’t doubt it will be unsuccessful. Which is why I suggested we axe PPB and just handle things with street justice.

AnarchoYeasty, in Kotek, Standard CEO Dan McMillan Form New Task Force to Tackle Portland’s Ills

Oh good a CEO is going to save us all. This will totally work.

    pkulak,

At least he has an interest in improving Downtown. 99% of Oregon’s population never even goes Downtown, assumes it’s literally on fire, and is fine with that.

    AnarchoYeasty,

Yeah 25% of Oregon lives in the area surrounding Portland. So that definitely isn’t true. The people who believe it’s in fire are the Republicans in rural Oregon and honestly fuck all of them. They are racists with a huge Nazi problem and want to return Oregon to being a white only state like it was. 20 years ago 30% of Oregon voted to keep the black exclusionary laws in the state constitution.

    pkulak,

Even 95% doesn’t wreck my argument. Most folks who live “in the area surrounding Portland” never go downtown (by which I just mean inner west side, not the literal neighborhood). How many folks who live in Gladstone or Estacada are spending their free time at Powell’s or Yamhill Pub?

That said, I absolutely agree with everything else you said.

kerrigan778, in Corbett girls basketball returns home after first title in over 36 years

Glad to hear her basketball finally made it back to her. What a journey.

ShepherdPie, in Nathan Vasquez leads in matchup against Multnomah County DA Mike Schmidt, poll finds

I’m curious why voters concerned about drug use and crime are looking at the DA to solve them when PPB is arresting around 1/10th of the number of people as compared to neighboring counties. Police are accepting pay to do the job of policing, yet are refusing to do it all the while attempting to make the DA the scapegoat for their own incompetence and grifting.

    sfunk1x,

A lot of low information mouthpieces have trouble understanding data, and it’s probably even more difficult with the PPB boot in their mouths. Many of them still say we’ve defunded the police since they haven’t actually bothered to apprise themselves of the city budgets or how they are delineated, ever.

Woozythebear, in Portland State University’s library to remain closed until fall due to damage from protest

Crazy a school shooting can happen and the entire place is ready for kids to come back a week later.

Sounds like they are just being assholes and closing the library in retaliation.

    pingveno,

The protesters damaged systems that are vital to operation of the building, like ripping out the fire alarm system. Windows are smashed and there is graffiti everywhere.

    Woozythebear,

All fixable in literally a week.

radicalautonomy, in Portland State University’s library to remain closed until fall due to damage from protest

Islamic University of Gaza’s Library to remain closed possibly forever due to damage from Israeli bombs. 🖕

    pingveno,

I hate this oft repeated retort. No one here is minimizing the suffering of the people of Gaza. But trashing a library on the other side of the planet is not going to stop the IDF from raining down bombs.

    radicalautonomy, (edited )

The protests on American university campuses are bringing Gazans hope. They are tired of likes and shares on their videos of the atrocities they are experiencing; sternly worded letters to their elected leaders, most whom are complicit, does absolutely nothing. The fact that young people half a world away are making headlines by being willing to take a stand and force people in power to decide whether or not to denounce Israeli occupation gives Gazans in a land where hope…like food, water, and medicine…is in short supply.

If trashing a library is what it takes to give them that hope, then so be it. It’s only property. If people are more upset about property damage than they are the continued genocide of indigenous people by occupiers funded by their own tax dollars, then they are morally bankrupt.

    pingveno,

If trashing a library is what it takes to give them that hope, then so be it.

Except he didn’t say anything of the sort. He said protests gave him hope. At no point did protests need to damage the library. There have been ongoing protests that have been garnering attention. Hell, they could have had a building sit in, sure, why not. Classic protest tactic. They didn’t need to damage the fire alarm system or spray paint every surface within reach to do it.

    It’s only property.

So if protesters randomly burnt down your housing, would you say the same thing? The same logic should hold, no? It’s just property.

    radicalautonomy, (edited )

Except he didn’t say anything of the sort. He said protests gave him hope. At no point did protests need to damage the library.

Why are you still talking to me, man? This is wasted energy. If you are so indignant about the opinion of one person on the internet that you’d waste the valuable time you could be spending speaking up on behalf of genocide victims, then your priorities are seriously fucking out of whack. I don’t care about your opinion.

Montagge, in Port of Portland will end shipping container service in October - OPB

Ugh that is going to upend a lot of people’s lives

Same. It was so good. There are some other great Thai restaurants now though like Gado Gado and Hat Yai.

Pok pok was amazing though. And Malka! Also I miss montage so much. Great food and they had cheap oyster shooters too

StupidBrotherInLaw, in Portland Mayor Wheeler unveils a new public camping ban policy

“What this does is it gives us now some reasonable tools for people who just don’t want to work with us,” Wheeler told OPB.

Multnomah County… has around 2,600 shelter beds — the majority of which are usually occupied — and an estimated population of 5,000 people living outside.

There’s only enough space for half of the homeless population yet he’s phrasing this as if they’re just not cooperative. Get fucked, Wheeler.

    NarrativeBear,

Cities should start hiring individuals that are homeless to pick up litter around town. Give them a minimum wage with some access to food and snacks (while on shift) and some priority to accommodations of some sorts for the nights.

If cities can’t do this maybe a non-profit or sorts, with help from city finding and maybe even have local businesses like the hardware stores or Walmart provide garbage bags, boots, jackets.

Two birds with one stone in a sense, clean cities and hopefully less encampments that seem to grow litter around them.

As with anything maybe it’s not a perfect solution, but every little bit helps. I suppose the goal is to help get as many individuals out of poverty as possible.

MisterD, in Washington County has eliminated homeless encampments

So they solved homelessness the same way Futurama solved global warming

    Sakychu,

By… dropping them in the water?
