There is not a #scarcity of funds for #transportation in the US. We spend tens of billions every year on #road construction and maintenance. That's a policy choice.

We could choose instead to pay for other things, like robust #PublicTransit & comprehensive supports for #walking and #bicycling.

Don't let anyone tell you there's not enough $. We have gobs of $. We just spend it to subsidize the least economically rational form of transportation.

Can we afford great without ? Yep.
Can we afford safe to every school? Yep.
Can we afford wide, along every ? Yep.
Can we afford to buy every household an ? Yep.

But instead we choose to subsidize , and treat everything else as an expensive, frivolous amenity.

Very much relatedly: not charging fares is not what's keeping transit from being great in this country. Refusing to make the policy choices that would make transit viable is where we fail.
If we want great transit, we need to:

  • fully fund transit systems
  • ensure safe, convenient first/last mile access by non-driving modes
  • fix our effing land use
  • build more housing. Much, much, much more housing

@DrTCombs i mean, I’m all in favor of that, but not if it means that I can’t have a single-family home and restrict the people around me from having anything other than a single-family home.

@geoff_green Then do I have a nextdoor thread for you, my friend

jumbanho,

@geoff_green @DrTCombs Will my visitors have to walk more than 50 feet to get to my house?

On a different note, have you noticed how 15/501 is so congested all the time?

DrTCombs,
@DrTCombs@transportation.social avatar

@jumbanho @geoff_green I mean it's an absolute parking lot for at least 3 of the 1440 minutes of every day.

DrTCombs,
@DrTCombs@transportation.social avatar

@jumbanho @geoff_green I didn't stick around enough to see the 50' comment but I would like to point out that the driveway to my single family home in a neighborhood that simply must be saved from /waves hands in the direction of 'other people'/ is longer than 50'

@DrTCombs 👏🏽
Blanketly opposing free transit is a pro-car position. Demanding that free transit AND improvements to service be paid for by cutting car subsidies makes sense. The milquetoast centrist position of “well they’re not going to just stop spending on highways and start spending responsibly so we have to make riders pay if we don’t want transit to totally suck” is a cop out.

@PedestrianError
Yes. So much yes.

Heck, if we cut the salaries of the top 100 CEO’s…
We could raise the funds.

breadandcircuses,

@DrTCombs Yes! 💯 I said much the same thing a couple of weeks ago, except I used more words to say it. 😁
