1/ Shun asked an assistant, "Can the Course [dao] be attained and possessed?"

He answered, "Even your body is not your own possession; how could you attain the Course?"

Shun said, "If my body is not my own possession, whose is it?"

2/ "It is just a form lent by heaven and earth. Life is not your own possession; it is just a harmony lent by heaven and earth. Your inborn nature and allotment of life are not your own possession, they are just a compliance lent by heaven and earth. Your sons and grandsons are not your own possessions; they are just sheddings lent by heaven and earth.

3/3 So in all our travels we can never really know where we are going, in all our dwellings we can never really know what is maintaining us, in all our eating we can never really know what we are tasting. This is all the bright and vigorous energy of heaven and earth—how could it be obtained and possessed?"

@nathanlovestrees we belong to no one. we belong together. are myriad critters, are intimately intertwined, felt in our flowing, flourishing in the nooks & crannies of decay. it is twilight — “it is summer. it is the solstice. a diamond of energy holds us. t is summer. It is the solstice. A diamond of energy holds us. webreathe, and what we call the next moment between us, where I take your empty hand and we start home, emptied of attempt and emptied of survival skill, is love.”

@iraantlers this is great! I was just reading some of Thoreau's journal this morning and I am reminded of this line about rye-heads...

"You must walk so gently as to hear the finest sounds, the faculties being in response. Your mind must not perspire. True, out of doors my thought is commonly drowned, as it were, and shrunken, pressed down by stupendous piles of light ethereal influences, for the pressure of the atmosphere is still fifteen pounds to a square inch...

@iraantlers I can do little more than preserve the equilibrium and resist the pressure of the atmosphere. I can only nod like the rye-head in the breeze. I expand more surely in my chamber, as far as expression goes, as if that pressure were taken off; but here outdoors is the place to store up influences."
