Someone once told me I'm too sincere to be funny. I still try though.

Full-time caregiver to a disabled brother interested mainly in Thoreau, Zhuangzi, animism, Kings of Convenience, and drinking too much tea.

Master's degrees in music theory and theology (no longer doing either), classically trained and folk musician (also no longer doing either), and I once organized and helped plant over 800 trees (I do still plant trees occasionally).

@nic haha that's awesome! I am going to look into that starling horde because it seems these starlings near me are preparing for something!

It dawned on me yesterday, as my son and I sat down under what we call "our" tree to eat a snack, that this one red maple has known my son since before he was born. There are blood kin whom he has not yet known (not to mention those he will never know). I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the tree knows him, that they are a relative.

nathanlovestrees,
@nathanlovestrees@disabled.social avatar

I should add, it's a tree I have known for a very large chunk of my adult life. My relationship to that red maple—and the moss under its canopy—has lasted longer than all of my human friendships.

I shared a picture about a month ago of something similar and joked it was unintentional coppicing. Here is another, also an American beech, also on the same hillside/ravine. I've wandered in all the beech-maple forests around me but have never seen this before. It's like it rots from the inside and then falls and then new suckers circle the perimeter of the stump. Intriguing...

@Tergenev my first thought was some kind of disease like that, it could be something that or something similar. I'll have to come back when it leafs out

We stood and watched this beauty for a solid 10 minutes, miraculously perched atop a very small young tree searching for food. Was close enough to get a decent video with my phone.

Brief video clip of a red-tailed hawk flying above and then behind bare trees at the edge of a meadow.

"In thought we distinguish alternatives, joy and sorrow, life and death, liking and dislike, and we mistake the principles which guide us to the preferred alternative for the Way itself. But the alternation of joy and sorrow, life and death, is itself the Way, and we run counter to it when we strive to perpetuate joy and life."

Made my recent journal entry about the story of Liezi into a medium post because why not. Still feels weird to share something that unpolished, but since unpolished jade and unhewn blocks are daoist metaphors after all it's probably fine.

@donkeyherder probably! Something I have on my list of things to research (not me trying to increase my knowledge haha!) is what the Lao-Zhuang position specifically on Confucian rituals was; was it a throw the baby out with the bathwater situation? Or did they want to save some of the bathwater and sell it online? (Sorry, lol I'm in a weird mood)

@danmelnick @iraantlers @microtones @BlackenedGreen @Cyrus I don't mean to butt in here, but I just recently saw a clip of Glenn Gould and while not a grunter his vocalizations definitely rub people (hoity toity classical musicians) the wrong way
